Lightning acquire defenceman Mark Streit from Flyers for centre Filppula
The Philadelphia Flyers traded Streit to the Lightning for Valtteri Filppula, a 2017 fourth-round pick and conditional 2017 seventh-round pick earlier Wednesday.
Flipped Mark Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2018 fourth round draft pick.
Beneath the shock, there’s more to this deal.
“It’s tough, it’s really tough”, defenseman Victor Hedman said. The NHL’s best teams mostly got better, and they usually did it without giving up major assets. He is highly competitive and competes on pucks. Philadelphia now holds the remainder of Filppula’s five-year, $25 million contract. The signing gives the Flyers a goalie to expose in the expansion draft who isn’t a prospect like Anthony Stolarz.
“They say, oh, a guy is in a contract year, he’s gonna light it up”, Hextall said. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman then sent Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun. He has a no-trade clause with a list of 16 clubs he was willing to be dealt to.
Last week, Hextall said he was not looking to be a buyer at the deadline, but a seller.
The process continued on Wednesday with moves that are good for the short term. Teams have to protect and expose at least one goalie. We knew this was a possibility. We’re going to stay together through this. “Mark Streit was a terrific human being”. Putting him back alongside fellow Swede Niklas Hjalmarsson down the stretch immediately makes Chicago a nightmare for opposing forwards.
In Filppula, the Flyers add depth down the middle. But come game time, you’ve got to push that aside.
“He’ll fit in this group and he’s an upgrade”.
Filppula, 32, has played 716 games with Detroit and Tampa.
There is offensive upside to Filppula on the Flyers. Ryan Callahan, who will miss the rest of the regular season with a hip injury, has a no-move clause.
The Predators are believed to be trying to acquire a second-line forward, preferably a center. Hextall considers him top six or nine.
“We’re in a position to be better off in the future”, Yzerman said. “There aren’t many pure scorers”. “If I do nothing, I probably lose a player off the roster that I prefer not to”. So, they are pretty good at getting shots but not at making them, and they are pretty good at limiting the other team’s shots but lousy at stopping the ones they do allow. “It doesn’t suggest we won’t sign Mase. but I wanted to get something done before the deadline”. “Can we make the playoffs?” “We believe strongly in our group and we’re confident that he will help our power play and supplement our core effectively”. His save percentage hadn’t dipped below 0.910 since the 2011-12 season, and a year ago, he posted a fantastic 0.924.
