Warren Beatty wants Academy president to ‘publicly clarify’ Oscar snafu
La La Land, a musical about a struggling actor (Emma Stone) and a jazz singer (Ryan Gosling), picked up five Oscars.
That’s what led to co-presenter Faye Dunaway seeing Emma Stone’s best actress card for “La La Land” in the envelope, and incorrectly announcing the film as the best picture victor. Moonlight actually won the Oscar, and the audience was left stunned.
“La La Land” Producer Jordon Horowitz holds up the card for the Best Picture victor “Moonlight” after the onstage gaffe. The Miss Universe event, which witnessed a similar gaffe in 2015 when Miss Columbia was wrongly announced before Miss Philippines was given the crown, also trolled the Academy for what host Jimmy Kimmel called “the weirdest TV finale since Lost” and tweeted, “Have your people call our people – we know what to do”.
“She was standing there with the envelope in her hand, very low-key”, Natoli said of Ruiz.
“I f**king love Moonlight. I think for a long time certain narratives, certain people just weren’t considered and for the Academy to make this considerable gesture, to see through all those barriers or perceived barriers and just see the film, that’s something”. “I wasn’t trying to be amusing”, he said, saying he had seen the name Emma Stone from “La La Land” when he opened his envelope.
“If I took myself out of my body and I looked at what happened, I would be inspired”.
“Best Actress Emma Stone backstage!”
Fellow producer Jordan Horowitz then said: “Guys, I’m sorry, no, there’s a mistake”. “But whatever story that was”.
“I [had] the card”. Given what happened in those last 10 minutes of the ceremony, I don’t know how I managed any words at all.
Moonlight director and coscreenwriter Barry Jenkins and took a couple of moments before realizing his film had won the big prize.
“Very clearly, even in my dreams this could not be true”, he said.
The Academy found out the error in the middle of “La La Land” producer’s acceptance speech.
By now, you’ve heard all about the Academy Awards blunder that will go down as the worst mistake in Hollywood award show history. The film ultimately took home awards for best actress, director, original music score, cinematography, production design and song.
“As I was taking Matt Damon’s wife to the side of the house, I heard John Esposito on my headset say, ‘Brian says he didn’t think they said the right victor”.
Since Sunday night’s live TV f*** up in which the Best Picture award mistakenly went to La La Land before being correctly handed over to Moonlight, both Cullinan and Ruiz have been in trouble with not only the Academy and their firm, but with the general public. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong envelope and when discovered [it] was immediately corrected.
“We extend our deepest apologies and condolences to the Patterson family”.
