The man behind Oscars’ ‘Gary from Chicago’ meme (cue the backlash)
The Daily Mail reports that public records reveal the 59-years-old is a registered sex offender who served 22 years in prison for attempted rape.
Though Denzel “fake married” Vickie and Gary, Black-ish actor Anthony Anderson, 46, said he’s “actually ordained to marry people in California”. Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney picked up the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Moonlight”.
According to Page Six, Jimmy Kimmel Live! cancelled Coe’s scheduled appearance on the show Monday night, though a producer was reported to have told him the cancellation was due to a timing issue.
“I’m a changed man”, Coe told ET on Tuesday.
One of the other tourists, Yulree Chun, tells CBS News the group underwent a security check when they arrived, with workers checking their bags while ushering them through an airport-like metal detector.
If there was anyone from Sunday night’s Oscars that had the time of their lives, it was Gary from Chicago and his fiancee´, Vickie.
Two prior convictions for robberies in the 1980s and in 1975 for attempted rape in Cook County, Ill., when he was 18 meant that perfume theft made Coe eligible for a life term under the three strikes law approved by California voters in 1994. Coe wasn’t the only Chicago connection to the Oscars. He was also convicted of burglary in IL during 1991. By contrast, Coe’s story evokes the harsh realities revealed in another of this year’s Oscar contenders, the Ava Duvernay-directed documentary 13th.
Coe’s public defender Karen Nash wrote in a Facebook post that he had served 20 years in prison for petty theft after being sentenced to life for stealing perfume in 1997. While that alone is questionable, a petty theft nearly cost him the rest of his life. She contended that she can not discuss anything further about Gary, without prior permissions. He certainly never asked for anybody’s sorry-ass handout of celebrity.
Thankfully, Gary doesn’t need Hollywood’s approval. “I’m ashamed and remorseful, and regret what I did as a young adult”. Hell yeah. But I can’t be chained to the past. “It was very painful and now I am a changed man”.
“Both from a policy level and a personal level and what little we know about Gary. his personality showed, I hope, a glimpse that there is redemption and grace and an opportunity for rehabilitation”, Romano said. “They will see dresses and gowns, but they will be on people”.
