Naomi Campbell convicted in paparazzo assault case, gets prison sentence
The bad scratched Di Giovanni’s eye, causing him to seek medical attention.
British supermodel Naomi Campbell was on Friday convicted by a Sicilian court of assaulting a photographer on the island of Lipari, and given a six month suspended prison term, Live Sicilia reported.
According to reports, the supermodel was given the sentence this week after photographer, Gaetano Di Giovanni, was taking photos of her stepping off of a boat with her then-boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin.
In August 2010, Campbell appeared at a war crimes trial against former Liberian president Charles Taylor at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in Leidschendam.
It is understood that the model’s legal representatives had previously reached an agreement with the photographer that led to him withdrawing the charges.
“We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident”, attorney Guido Carlo Alleva said in a statement gathered by E!
Her lawyer has stated they will appeal the ruling.
But prosecutor Francesco Massara ordered the trial to go ahead in the public interest because of the gravity of the charges against her, Italy’s national news agency Ansa said. She served a five-day community service sentence in New York City, paid a fine and completed an anger management course. A decade later in 2008 she admitted attacking police at Heathrow in a row over lost luggage. No comment was heard from Campbell’s side regarding the reopened case.
