According to an article at Droid-Life, Google Senior VP of hardware, Rick Osterloh confirmed during a quick chat with the crew of AndroidPit that the Pixel 2 will stay in the premium realm of smartphones. However, the upcoming Pixel 2 is going to cost you a bit. Google made the big announcements this week, including the addition of Google Assistant to more devices and changes to the way you text on Android.
Sadly, Rick Osterloh didn’t disclose the device’s exact release. Repeated questions during the round table discussion led to the same answer: no cheap Pixel from Google.
Since the first Pixel came in October a year ago, keeping Osterloh’s statement in mind we can safely assume that we are looking for another October date for the release of this new phone.
Further while talking to the reporters, Osterloh also touched on a subject that the Pixel brand would also remain “premium”.
Google chose to finally venture into the smartphone world by itself past year with the Pixel lineup. Also, at least the tech giant isn’t splitting its focus by tying to delve into the lower- and mid-market segments, unlike other manufacturers.
Google’s hardware head wouldn’t give a more specific timetable for the new Pixel beyond sometime this year. It will be released in two variants namely Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL.
Both Samsung and Apple are expected to equip their flagship smartphones with an wireless charging pad. Assistant builds upon Google Now’s foundation but takes things up several notches.
Google is apparently carrying out several tests at the moment with different processors, including the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chips as well as specialised Intel hardware.
