Attorneys fighting to get woman detained after Immigration rally out of jail
Vargas’ is now in immigration detention in Jackson, and her lawyer expects that she will soon be transferred to an ICE facility in Louisiana where her father and brother are now awaiting deportation. When ICE agents left her home, Vargas locked the doors and hid in the closet. She was taken into custody and then to a detention center in Louisiana. President Donald Trump during his campaign said he would rescind the program, but has since said he would seek a more favorable solution for its beneficiaries, who are known as “Dreamers”.
“We conduct ongoing community engagement efforts to reassure witnesses and victims of crime that they will not be targeted by law enforcement based on their immigration status”, Rombosk said. All because she spoke up and spoke out.
Even so, Vargas, who aspires to be a university math teacher, wanted to speak out this week about recent ICE raids, Stuesse said. Renewal costs $495, and she reportedly saved up to submit a renewal application, which is now processing. “She has already received the receipt of her application, and the biometrics appointment is set for sometime next week”, she added.
“Like so many immigrants, she doesn’t take this country for granted”, Peterson said.
Daniela Vargas, a young woman brought to the United States at the age of 7 and later granted DACA status, was also detained after speaking out against the ICE round-up. The Huffington Post reports that those who use this process to enter the country have no means to challenge the removal.
Vargas had spoken at a press conference along with a coalition of immigrants rights groups and religious figures. “This seems to be the message we’re getting from this, which is surprising and not what I would’ve expected”. Peterson argues that Vargas’ entire case should be considered since she was a child when she entered the USA and didn’t waive her right with her overstay – that was her parents’ choice. “But we know our rights, and we’re going to continue as an organization to push for people to know their rights so if they’re going to try to pull a fast one on us that’s not going to work”.
“I was scared for my life”, she said at the event.
“They’re going to be trained in federal immigration law”, Thornton said.
“We can call it the greatest wall in the history of walls, I don’t care”, he said. And what we know they said is, ‘You know who we are, you know why we’re here’. I’ve even tried to join the military, and I can’t do that. And when I was brought here, I had to learn a whole new country and leave behind the one that I did know.
The case of another detained DACA recipient is being watched closely as an early test of how the Trump administration will treat program beneficiaries. She applied for, and was granted, DACA status in 2012.
Vargas’s story is yet another nightmare scenario amid stringent ICE crackdowns, supposedly targeting Trump’s ballyhooed “criminals” but are instead ripping apart families and demonizing average people simply for their undocumented status. But there’s really no blueprint. The timing raised questions for people like Sen. “I feel like I am an American”.
Immigration enforcement actions last week in OR appear routine, but have taken on greater meaning for advocates for illegal immigrants in light of the current political atmosphere. As for DACA renewals, it’s a judgment call. The US Department of Homeland Security released the memorandums on February 20, 2017. When asked directly about DREAMers by ABC’s David Muir, Trump indicated that a policy would be coming within four weeks, but that DACA recipients “shouldn’t be very anxious”. “That’s wrong. That’s immoral and they should ask themselves who they are”, said Singh. “There is no one size fits all”. They also take a “no holds barred” approach to enforce problematic laws in place since 1996 that have already caused enormous harm to USA families.
Are DACA recipients in the United States legally? .
Vargas appreciates the opportunities afforded her in America, her lawyer said. ICE picks up the inmate and transports the person to another detention facility.
Vargas will now be processed and face an immigration judge.
But because of this technicality, ICE tracked her down, and put her into the deportation pipeline.
Meanwhile, activists are once again mobilizing. A rally in support of Vargas is happening now on the south steps of the Mississippi State Capitol Building. So far, 21,000 have signed.
