Citing No Evidence, Trump Accuses Obama Of Wiretapping Trump Tower
Trump made the typo-laden claims via Twitter early Saturday morning.
“As I’ve said since the beginning and have repeated since, the … committee on Intelligence will follow the evidence where it leads”. “And if it is, this would be the greatest overreach and the greatest abuse of power that I think we have ever seen and a huge attack on democracy itself”.
President-elect Donald Trump (L) listens as U.S. President Barack Obama speaks during a meeting in the Oval Office November 10, 2016, in Washington, DC.
A spokesman for former President Obama has dismissed the accusation as “simply false”. Manafort not only worked out of Trump Tower as Trump’s campaign manager, he lived there before Trump hired him; it may be that when Trump said Obama was tapping “his” phones, he meant phones in Trump Tower (belonging to Manafort), not his own personal phones. Asked whether such a warrant existed, James R. Clapper Jr., a former director of national intelligence, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” program, “Not to my knowledge, no”. “I can deny it”. Lindsey Graham told the crowd he would investigate President Trump’s claims about wiretapping.
Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said the White House was attempting to deflect focus away from investigations into possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. “It is something that really hurts people’s view of government”.
More than 24 hours after President Trump tweeted, without any evidence, charges that his predecessor wire tapped his phones, the White House has put out a statement.
Mr Trump’s administration has come under pressure from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and congressional investigations into contacts between some members of his campaign team and Russian officials during the campaign period.
According to a report in the BBC, citing unnamed sources, a joint government task force was formed in spring of 2016 to look into an intelligence report from a foreign government that Russian money was somehow coming into the USA presidential race.
“The New York Times, BBC, have also talked about and reported on the potential of this having had happened”. Mr. Trump claims he recently learned Mr. Obama ordered what Mr. Trump describes as a “Watergate-style” wiretap on Trump Tower in NY. The Justice Department has yet to release a statement, however.
The timing of Donald Trump’s latest outburst has led Democrats to accuse him of trying to divert attention from his administration’s difficulties over Russian Federation. NBC News quoted an unnamed senior USA official as saying that Trump failed to consult others in the government beforehand, and that the claims are baseless.
