Attorney General Sessions To Step Away From Trump-Russia Investigation
“He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional”, Mr. Trump wrote over two tweets about Mr. Sessions not telling the Senate he had twice met the Russian ambassador a year ago.
Trump has also defended former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, whose resignation was sparked by contradictions to top White House officials about his conversations with the same Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.
Jeff Sessions repeatedly denied any contacts with Russian Federation when has was asked about possible communications during his Senate confirmation hearings, leading the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee to demand his resignation.
At a news conference, Sessions said he had already met with his staff and chose to remove himself from investigating the campaign before the story came out.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that Sessions was the only one of the 26 committee members who met with Kislyak past year.
Sessions went on to describe one of his meetings with Kislyak, a scheduled sit-down in his Senate office with two senior aides there as well.
Now that Sessions has stepped away from the possible probes, Cummings told Blitzer that “I don’t know what he knows now”. He said he could not recall any “specific political discussions” with Kislyak.
Sessions maintains he spoke honestly and correctly during the hearing, though admitted it would have been better to add, “But I did meet with this one Russian official a couple of times”. Al Franken what he would do if he learned that anyone from Trump’s campaign had communicated with Russian officials during the campaign.
The move came after revelations that Sessions twice spoke to the Russia’s ambassador to the US during the presidential campaign.
Sessions spokesperson, Sarah Isgur Flores, said late Wednesday that Sessions held that meeting in his capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services panel, not as a Trump adviser.
The announcement came amid bipartisan calls for to Sessions to recuse himself – and Democrat calls to resign.
Flynn, who was sacked from his position over “trust issues”, had previously misled Vice-President Mike Pence about meeting with Moscow’s USA ambassador, Sergei Kislyak. The most disturbing new knowledge is that Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have lied under oath to cover up his own contacts with the Russian government.
