North Carolina loss highlights Duke men’s basketball’s frontcourt deficiencies with postseason arriving
North Carolina’s 90-83 win against Duke at the Smith Center on Saturday wasn’t about the outright ACC regular season championship, rivalry bragging rights, sending out an accomplished senior class in style or finishing the season undefeated at home.
With Sunday’s 8-7 win, the Tar Heels extended their win streak to 10 and opened ACC play with a series sweep.
Sound familiar? It should.
The Tar Heels won the regular season and then backed it up with the tournament title a year ago in Washington, D.C., just as they did in 2006-07 (Tampa tourney) and 2007-08 (Charlotte tourney).
The media also selected Jackson to the All-ACC first team. The Greenwich, Connecticut, native has scored at least 16 points in 10 of his last 11 games and has nine 20-point games this season.
Junior Lexie Brown shined in her first conference tournament game as a Blue Devil, scoring a team-high 22 points as Duke defeated the Orange by a score of 68-46.
Here’s how to watch Duke vs. UNC online. “And that’s it. Sometimes, it’s not nuclear science here”.
Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes recorded a double-double, tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds. The 2014 recruiting class could arguably be the most valuable one of coach Roy Williams’ tenure because the players had every reason not to sign with the Heels.
Things often get heated during contests between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels, and that was the case in the closing minutes of the first half, courtesy of Allen.
Hart finished 8 of 15 from the field with six rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the Wildcats (28-3, 15-3 Big East) to their fifth consecutive victory over the Hoyas (14-17, 5-13) – tying the longest streak in the history of the rivalry. Because they believed, Carolina is poised to claim a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and will be a favorite to return to the Final Four.
The Tar Heels have done just that.
The game also drew former UNC and National Basketball Association great Michael Jordan, who appeared at halftime with North Carolina football coach Larry Fedora to announce a Jordan Brand apparel deal with the program. Duke is playing for the double bye, but they’re also playing for longevity, which should make for a lot of different rotations (and plenty more of Frank Jackson).
While guard Rebecca Greenwell was held scoreless in the first half for only the second time this season, she made two critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter.
There would be nothing doing for the first 2:25 of the final frame, until two foul shots from Syracuse made it 51-41.
However, they found their groove again when they finished the season with three straight wins, including a revenge win over the Tar Heels. Allen and Amile Jefferson were both banged up earlier this week and could be game-time decisions in this one.
