Four-States Area Prepares With Severe Weather Awareness Week
Gov. Sam Brownback signed a proclamation February 17 designating March 6-10 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas.
The governor has declared the week of March 5, Severe Weather Preparedness Week in the state of IL.
Chief Jason Lockridge says Monday night’s storms left damage “well north of seven figures” in the town of around 9,000 residents about 25 miles north of Kansas City. He suggests practicing what you would do in the event of a tornado. If there’s not a basement, seek shelter in a small closet.
Mobile homes were flipped over in the area of West Main and Hilltop.
That tornado killed a man in Crossville who took shelter in an outbuilding during the storm.
Wednesday will focus on flood awareness. “The time you take now to prepare will make all the difference if and when disaster strikes”, Simpson said. “This made a for a very perilous situation for millions of Americans.in addition to the tornadoes, giant tennis ball sized hail was reported across eastern Kansas and Missouri”.
The National Weather Service issued a watch at 2:11 p.m. Monday that covers all of Iowa except for seven counties in the northwest and 11 counties in the southeast corners of the state. There were two flooding deaths in the state in 2016, according to NWS.
“A WARNING is when we detect on radar or get a report of risky weather”. “If you’re prepared for any of these things, you’re probably prepared for all”. “In 2016 alone, there were over 525 damaging wind events, which injured at least six people; 67 reports of large hail; and five confirmed tornadoes in SC, with 11 people injured due to lightning”.
Advance warning is critical, and one of the best ways to get emergency information is with an emergency alert radio. “Having that information and knowing what’s going on, what you might be able to expect, can help out quite a bit”.
Even though every thunderstorm produces rain and lightning, not every thunderstorm is severe. Their under-the-girder-type construction can cause a risky wind tunnel effect.
