Celebrating Women This International Women’s Day
We continue to live in a world where patriarchy, sexism and misogyny exists – where women are still unable to participate equally in society.
Today is International Women’s Day – and while there are reasons to celebrate, the World Economic Forum has estimated that the global inequalities between women and men in education, health, income and more, will not be closed until 2186.
Organizer’s of today’s strike say the goal is to show the economic power and significance women have on the USA and global economies. The school is still offering “backup care” that day to those who need it. After all, it’s March 8 – “A Day Without A Woman” – and here you are, reading a column by one.
While the gender equality demonstration, which comes on the same day as International Women’s Day, was organized prior to President Trump’s election and inspired by women’s protests in other countries.
If you’re an obstetrician and a patient is insane enough to go into labor on A Day Without A Woman, let her lasso a male doctor. Women are also encouraged to leave calls to action in “out of office” replies, describing why they are striking.
Thousands of women across the United States are getting ready to participate in the nationwide women’s strike on Wednesday. Our priorities are not the same, and neither is the way we seek to balance our lives with our careers.
Carolyn Hill said she’s marching on Wednesday to oppose Department of Human Services decisions that remove children from poor homes. Some people are opting to go to work, but plan to show support by wearing red or patronizing women-owned businesses. Remember “Lysistrata”, the Greek play about one woman’s insane anti-war plan? Bob Casey, D-Pa., on Thursday, and meeting with members of the state House and Senate in Harrisburg on March 21.
For those who can not skip work, whether domestic or otherwise, there are alternatives, organizers say, including wearing purple for International Women’s Day or standing for a few minutes at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, in addition to events surrounding the observance, two other organizations – the International Women’s Strike and the “Day Without A Woman”- will rally women to step away from their jobs and take to the streets in a sign of solidarity.
International Women’s Day Rally: The indoor event runs from 7 to 9 p.m.at the headquarters for the Chicago Teachers Union, 1901 W. Carrol Ave.
At this time, Fox doesn’t have any planned events, special programming, posts or campaigns set for A Day Without a Woman.
