Jets disappointed Richardson hid arrest
The potential punishment for resisting arrest carries a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
The NFL said Thursday that it was examining whether Richardson would face additional punishment for the July 14 incident under its personal-conduct policy. The arraignment was moved up from its originally scheduled date of October. 27.
An hour later, a police report alleged that the star defensive lineman had made a much bigger one. He was the league’s top defensive rookie in 2013 and a Pro Bowler in 2014.
Sheldon Richardson is not having a good offseason.
“Seeing yourself going from Pro Bowl to second string, can’t do nothing but be disappointed in yourself”, Richardson said.
Reported by authorities in Missouri’s St. Charles County, Richardson was involved in a high-speed race on the highway, where he was clocked going “as fast as 143 MPH” as he was being chased by police.
At the time of his arrest, Richardson was driving with two other adults and a 12-year-old child. Officers discovered a semiautomatic handgun beneath the driver’s side floor mat.
He’s already serving a four-game suspension for a positive marijuana test; go ahead and make that 16 games. But he insisted, “I’m not a dope fiend, man. I can say “no, ‘ I just chose not to”. “I apologized to my teammates and this organization”. There’s money on the line.
On if the team plans to discipline Richardson…
“I let (the organization) down, simple as that”, said Richardson, acknowledging he must improve his decision making.
“A lot of guys have been in this league long enough, we’ve all done things where you wake up the next morning and are like what did I do and why did I do that?” Richardson obviously forgot the brake lights would still light up when he stepped on them and ultimately it was those lights that gave him away. He said he apologized to his teammates, but hadn’t yet spoken to owner Woody Johnson.
Richardson, entering his third NFL season, spoke to reporters after the team’s first practice of training camp – but before the news broke about the charges.
Sheldon Richardson reportedly did not make the Jets aware of his pending legal issues. That’s something he has to deal with and obviously it’s a problem there and we have to try to help him. It will be a good lesson for him. “I brought it on myself, me missing the four games, Just a little disappointed and embarrassed for my parents’ sake”. “His actions will speak louder than his words going forward”, Bowles said. The Jets need to send a message and release Richardson immediately. He had numerous opportunities to contact the team and advise them of the incident, they could then prepare for this and be proactive. instead he decided to keep his head down and pretend like it didn’t happen.
