Mike Glennon expected to get $14.5 million per year from Bears
A deal between the Bears and free agent quarterback Mike Glennon is all but done, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal – first reported early Thursday by NFL Media – hadn’t been finalized.
There a couple things to caution before judging the Bears’ signing of Glennon.
Cutler is still a Bear, as noted above, but that’s not expected to last for long. He started five games the next year but fell out of favor with new coach Lovie Smith, who led the Bears for nine seasons.
The move: The Bears re-signed quarterback Connor Shaw, an exclusive rights free agent.
-Has elite size at 6-6, 225.
-Has a 2-to-1 career TD-to-INT ratio (30-to-15), with a 59.4 completion percentage. In 2013 and ’14, he started 18 games. So, it would appear the Bears won the bidding war against themselves.
With that in mind, we are here to round up all of the rumors surrounding the Bears and what direction they may go once contracts can officially be signed later this week.
Glennon was drafted by the Bucs back in 2013 out of North Carolina State but ultimately fell behind Winston when Winston became Tampa Bay’s first overall pick in the 2015 draft. Osweiler has a better resume than Glennon, but that still resulted in an expensive benching.
Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times expects Ryan Griffin to be the Bucs’ backup quarterback moving forward. Pryor, Tony Jefferson, Johnathan Hankins, Larry Warford, Riley Reiff could have also made this list, with plenty more behind them. While there were whispers regarding other teams interest in Glennon, it was clear that the Bears were the front-runners all along.
An ideal scenario might be to sign Glennon, then invest a second-round or third-round pick in Patrick Mahomes or Davis Webb.
It never hurts to have multiple young options at the most important position on the field.
On the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period, CSNChicago.com reported, citing an National Football League source, that the Jets have removed themselves from competition for the free agent quarterback. The hope here is that, despite giving him all this money, that the Bears will still draft a QB and take his developement seriously.
