Alshon Jeffery Signs One-Year Contract With Eagles
NFL Network reports that Jeffery turned down a longer deal with the Vikings in an effort to enhance his value with one big season in Philly. Despite a few obstacles over the course of the 2016 season, Alshon Jeffery has signed a long-term deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.
The former member of the Chicago Bears will join the Philadelphia Eagles and reunite with his old receivers coach Mike Groh.
He set career-highs with 89 catches and 1,421 yards in 2013, while he caught 10 touchdown passes in 2014.
Jeffery also joins wide-receiver Torrey Smith, who agreed to a deal with the Eagles earlier this afternoon.
Despite a poor 2016 season, the Eagles hope the addition of Jeffery will help bolster their wide-receiver core. He only had 267 yards on 20 receptions with three touchdowns in 12 games last season, but he was playing for the terrible 49ers. The Eagles have expressed a desire to build through the draft, yet opted to go for one of the top-end free agents in this case.
There’s no question that Jeffery is a tremendous talent, but he’s struggled the last couple of years because of injuries, poor quarterback play and a suspension for using a banned substance.
But it certainly makes the Eagles much more unsafe in 2017.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (17) warms up before the game between the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The short-term contract lessens the risk the Eagles are taking on Jeffery.
