Ryan Rolls Up Sleeves, Gives PowerPoint Presentation on Obamacare Replacement
And with the American Health Care Act, otherwise known as “Trumpcare,” making its way through the House at an alarmingly fast rate, Carlson had just as many criticisms as he did questions for Ryan.
Conservatives dislike the bill, which retains some elements of Obamacare and creates a new tax-credit entitlement. In January, he was the only Senate Republican to vote against the first step in repealing the law.
The bill has now reached the committee stage in the House of Representatives, but the GOP is still on defense. Surrounded by a gaggle of reporters and cameras, he was turned away.
On Thursday, the American Action Network – a group with ties to Republican leaders and the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC – said it would spend $500,000 against 30 Republican lawmakers, many of whom are members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, urging them to support the House GOP’s “American Health Care Act”. “A year ago, House Republicans said, we need to take a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare to the country. We think the only way to repeal ObamaCare is to separate repeal from replace”. Proponents of “A Better Way Agenda”, would attempt to accomplish goals like allowing people to purchase insurance across state lines in legislation later in the year.
Repealing ObamaCare is easy. But many members from the Tea Party wing are upset that it keeps too much of the Affordable Care Act in place, and effectively replaces the law’s signature tax with a heavy surcharge assessed to people who forgo health insurance.
But now Ryan will be judged on results, not only on repealing Obamacare, but also for an overhaul of the tax code he has pledged to bring to a vote before the August recess. With Utah Republican Sen. Paul is the only one to definitively say he will vote against it.
It was Vice President Pence’s motorcade driving by.
“This is something that we as conservatives have been dreaming about for decades”, he said.
Armed with a Powerpoint presentation, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan attempted a lecture in a televised press conference Thursday about why Obamacare should be repealed.
Some conservatives may be willing to budge on the Medicaid expansion, and the timeline for its expiration.
Paul’s bill would make it easier for states to experiment with their own Medicaid blueprints.
James L. Madara, MD, chief executive and executive vice president of the American Medical Association (AMA) wrote a letter to Congressional leaders refusing to support the new Republican bill. Obamacare prohibits insurers on the exchange from charging high-risk consumers a higher premium than low-risk ones of a similar age, and it forces them to offer coverage to the uninsured even if they have “preexisting conditions”. Two House committees – Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce – advanced their parts of the legislation on Thursday despite Democratic opposition and concern from other groups.
“We had the wisdom to listen and now this week we’ll have the courage to lead”, he said. Tom Cotton (R-AR) are concerned Ryan’s bill actually does the reverse.
“I just think that’s bogus”, Ryan said.
“This bill is not it”, Labrador said. “If they don’t have 218 votes, there will be a negotiation, and conservatives will have a seat at the table”.
