Brian Hoyer agrees to deal with 49ers
Here in March, Hoyer is the only quarterback on San Francisco’s roster.
On second thought: the San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback.
Hoyer, 31, has made 31 starts in his eight-year National Football League career with Arizona, Cleveland, Houston and Chicago.
He joins Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin as a potential playmaker in a position group that was sorely lacking in that area in 2016. Hoyer was medically cleared at season’s end.
Hoyer could be a bridge starter for the 49ers or also a backup, which means his acquisition wouldn’t necessarily mean there wouldn’t be interest in trading for Cousins. That’s an unlikely scenario now, but not entirely out of the question.
According to NFL.com, the San Francisco 49ers and Brian Hoyer reportedly agrees to a two-year principle deal.
Previously, Hoyer spent the 2015 season with the Houston Texans, whom he helped get to the playoffs after winning the AFC South Division title.
An hour ago, it seemed like the 49ers’ quarterback situation was, at least temporarily, resolved. Hoyer comes with a reputation for being an intelligent player. But, the Jets bowed out of that race quickly according to CSN Chicago. Cousins has too many options in front of him and a strong relationship with Shanahan.
Hoyer worked with new 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan when he was with the Cleveland Browns in 2014.
Upon taking over for an injured Jay Cutler last season, Brian Hoyer topped 300 passing yards in all four games he started and finished for the Chicago Bears.
While Hoyer might make Jets fans groan, he could be an optimal fit as that low-priced, bridge quarterback.
