Netflix and other streaming services will come to Switch “in time” – Reggie
But over the past few years, the world of online video has expanded well beyond those core apps. Most notable among those is the lack of online browsing or streaming services. According to a report from video marketing and research firm SuperData Research, the sales distribution for the new console is pegged at 45 percent in North America, 35 percent in Europe, and 12 percent in Japan. It’s an impressive feat of hardware engineering, but the concept behind the Switch isn’t exactly new. The list goes on. In other words, Nintendo wants to concentrate on making the best possible gaming machine for taking on the road, which will be the Switch’s main USP. Most people already own dedicated media streaming devices regardless. At the time, it was a pretty impressive feature. With that said, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get any indication as to how long of a wait will have to endure before we are able to enjoy the latest Super Smash Bros. installment.
Despite the fact that the Nintendo Switch release was rushed, there’s a tremendous upside to it now that the new hybrid gaming system was well-received by the gaming community. But what’s the point?
It is enlightening to learn, though, that services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu might launch Switch apps in the future.
“What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play”, Fils-Aime says. As CNET notes, 2014’s Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS sold more than a combined 13.5 million units.
A firm timeline wasn’t given for when streaming video apps would be available for the Switch, with Fils-Aime only saying support would be added “in time”. In that context, supporting YouTube and Twitch would make sense.
Of course, it’s not so hard to turn off the Switch and access these services from an Apple TV, Roku, or even another game console.
