China Proposes Deal to Ease Tensions Over N. Korean Missiles
USA officials have rejected China’s proposal for Washington to halt war games with South Korea in exchange for a pause in the North’s nuclear-weapons program.
“Media reports say that the deployment of the US THAAD systems has begun in South Korea”.
According to CNN, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi cautioned the USA against the deployment of a controversial missile defense system in South Korea, which is strongly opposed by Beijing.
It called on North Korea to suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the United States and South Korea halting the military exercises. The use of force will not bring solutions.
The United States and North Korea are set for a “head-on collision” with neither side willing to give way, China’s top diplomat has warned. “We’re not rewarding that behaviour in any way, shape or form”, Toner said.
But China has long considered that putting the system in South Korea is a threat.
The analyst also rejected the fact that US Navy’s patrols in the South China Sea are “provocative”, explaining that Washington has been conducting naval and air operations in this region for years but has never violated Chinese airspace.
The US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley later told reporters that “all options were on the table” regarding North Korea.
Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan publicly voiced his opposition against a THAAD present for Taiwan, said the island had no need to be drawn into other countries’ conflicts. Once again, with South Korea, America is carrying out its annual broad spring military exercise, called “Foal Eagle”, in the area.
Moon Sang-gyun, a spokesman for the South Korean defence ministry, said: “The joint exercises will continue without a halt”. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is headed to the region next week.
The People’s Republic of China has banned the import of goods and services from South Korea including video games, and it might not because of all those saucy MMORPG elf costumes.
Both North Korea and China have repeatedly stated they are strongly against the deployment of THAAD.
“North Korea may insist on being recognised as a nuclear weapons state as a precondition, in which case the US would have to decide whether to make that concession”, she said.
China is also wary of the USA deployment because the THAAD’s far reaching radar can be used to track China’s own missile systems.
The Pentagon insists that the system, like one being deployed in Europe, is created to protect against missiles fired by rogue states – North Korea and Iran respectively – not against Russian or Chinese nuclear warheads.
The U.S. military said THAAD can intercept and destroy short and medium-range ballistic missiles during the last part of their flights.
In a historic ruling Friday, the Constitutional Court formally removed impeached President Park from office over a massive corruption scandal that has plunged the country into political chaos.
Tillerson may probably try to explain to China about the “necessity” of deploying THAAD, said Li.
Similar proposals have been rejected by the U.S.and South Korea in the past, arguing that the missile tests defy worldwide law and should not be negotiated.
The reclusive country of North Korea launched four ballistic missiles early on Monday morning. North Korea has been flexing its nuclear muscles of late and we already know that its leader isn’t one to keep his intentions under the lid.
“It’s not a matter of trading with North Korea for it complying with its worldwide obligations, that’s not what’s at stake”, he said.
He pointed out that plans for a North Korean official to travel to the US for unofficial talks had reportedly fallen through.
THAAD is created to protect against threats from North Korea.
