Oregon US Attorney Says He’s Not Affected By Sessions’ Resignation Request
Robert Capers, who served in the Eastern District, which includes Long Island, was among the USA attorneys asked to resign.
It was not immediately clear if US attorney Dana Boente is among those dismissed. This is a pretty standard practice – new presidents usually purge their predecessors’ appointees upon taking office, though this wave came somewhat unexpectedly.
“Few events are more corrosive to a democracy than having the Attorney General make false statements under oath about a matter the Justice Department is investigating”, added Christopher Anders, deputy director of the ACLU’s legislative office.
The U.S. Department of Justice says the request is similar to those made in previous presidential transitions. According to the officials, the attorney general spoke to Kislyak in July and September “at the height of what USA intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the US presidential race”.
Roughly four months after U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told reporters that President Donald Trump had asked him to stay on as the top prosecutor for the Southern District of NY, the Trump administration requested the resignation 46 U.S. Attorneys appointed by former President Barack Obama-including the Manhattan-based corruption-buster.
Bharara reportedly met with Trump after the election and agreed to remain in his position during the Trump administration.
Sessions himself was asked to resign as the US attorney in Alabama in March, 1993 by Clinton’s Attorney General Janet Reno.
On January 10, when questioned by Senator Al Franken (D-Minn.) about Russian ties to the Trump campaign, according to PolitiFact, Sessions testified under oath that he “did not have communications with the Russians”.
Sessions has faced controversy since it was revealed he did not disclose meetings with a Russian ambassador during his Senate confirmation, CNN reported.
West Tennessee federal prosecutor Edward L. Stanton III announced in February he would be resigning his post.
Sessions left the door open for a special counsel to take the lead on the investigation into alleged Obama-era scandals during an interview with conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday.
