Republican Obamacare plan would repeal Medicaid expansion, taxes
House Republicans have tonight released their plan for an Obamacare replacement, calling it the American Health Care Act.
The Freedom Caucus consists of some three dozen of the most conservative House members. “I mean, the Dow is over 20,000”, Carlson said.
“So essentially, you’ve got a situation where you’re giving a flat amount that doesn’t do anything for affordability for the lowest earning Americans”.
Other Republicans have their own problems with the proposal. It removes the fine for not having coverage, making it less likely that those who are healthy or who can not afford a plan will sign up.
Here’s what politicians are saying. Once the two committees have approved their parts of the legislation, both will go to the house budget committee, which is expected to merge them into one bill that will then be voted on by the full house of representatives. Here, for instance, is Oregon U.S. Rep. Greg Walden decrying the current health care marketplaces set up under Obamacare. Even President Donald Trump has yet to voice unqualified support, and without his firm backing, the new law’s chances of passage may be slim.
What Democrats say: Democrats are united in its condemnation.
But four Republican senators have already said the plan does not adequately protect low-income people who received Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Obamacare’s premium subsidies, which are tied to income and the cost of premiums on exchanges, are replaced with an age-adjusted refundable tax credit.
That’s the only difference here is we basically said, President Trump and House Republicans said, we’re going to get one crack at this.
As Trump said in January, “You have deductibles that are so high that after people go broke paying their premiums, which are going through the roof, the health care can’t even be used by them because their deductibles are so high”.
“I guess my question is, looking at the last election, was the message of that election really we need to help investors?”
He added: “It’s a complicated process but actually it’s very simple, it’s called good health care”. “It’s called good healthcare”. He also said Republicans and Democrats must work together to fix the system. Because the proposed plan leaves many of Obamacare’s burdensome insurance regulations in place.
“There is so much more than unites Republicans than divides us on this issue”, Mr. Brady said.
While important details remain to be worked out, including the size and distribution of tax credits for purchasing insurance, the House proposal has Republican DNA, emphasizing free markets and individual choice, and benefiting those who are higher income and healthy. “House Republicans are choosing to act now”. The second and third leg include unwinding Obamacare regulations using executive orders and passing additional legislation with provisions not possible to include in the reconciliation language.
“This is not the Obamacare repeal bill we’ve been waiting for”. And I encourage you to do it.
