Six Nations 2017: Scotland ‘more than capable’ of Twickenham win – Stuart Hogg
England Six Nations player Owen Farrell answers some quick fire questions on himselfWhat is the latest team news ahead of the England vs Scotland match?
In a press conference best described as prickly a few hours later at England’s Pennyhill Park base, Jones admitted that Farrell was a concern going into England’s fourth match of the championship, although he would not reveal the exact area where he was injured.
The noises off have ranged from a random “New York Times” discussion of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” – a “parallel existence” of “19th-century African-American spiritual…and boisterous drinking song turned sports anthem” – to the British & Irish Lions tour looming in June, with head coach Warren Gatland allowed a watching brief at England training.
The 2017 Six Nations match takes place Saturday at Twickenham, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm GMT (11am EST for those rugby fans in the US).
Asked if England have sufficient cover should Farrell, who was named in the starting XV earlier on Thursday, be unavailable, Jones said: “We’ve got plenty of back-ups”.
Standing in their way will be a Scotland side brimming with confidence who will be looking for their first win at Twickenham since 1983. He has also handled nine full internationals matches and most recently Ireland’s famous win over New Zealand in Chicago in November.
Mako Vunipola 18. Kyle Sinckler 19.
Replacements: Ford (Edinburgh), Dell (Edinburgh), Berghan (Edinburgh), Swinson (Glasgow), Du Preez (Edinburgh), Pyrgos (Glasgow), Weir (Edinburgh), Bennett (Glasgow). It’s a bit too simple to say this is all about power v pace but England will certainly look to play a tighter game. I thought with Italy’s ruck tactics they adapted well, but they will be annoyed about that and they won’t want to be caught out again. England have failed to lead at the break in all three of their matches this year but gone on to win.
The full-back has scored three tries in the campaign so far and insists Scotland have proven they are no longer a push-over.
When England and Scotland do battle, each side will have a Norfolk-born player – and they will be up against each other. Whether he starts for England or is thrown into the mix at some later point in the game, the 25-year-old can expect a bruising afternoon of rugby that will put his experience and resilience to the test.
