UP exit polls 2017: BJP set to be single largest party
Four other, smaller states declared results on Saturday: Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur.
The Election Commission says Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 293 out of 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh state legislature.
Punjab, which witnessed a triangular contest in the Assembly polls, could be in for a neck and neck fight between the Congress and the AAP while the ruling SAD-BJP may face a drubbing, according to pollsters.
Point 2: The Congress, which had nine seats in the outgoing House, steeply increased its tally to 17, besides ensuring the victory of a party-backed independent candidate.
But, in all probability, the results showed that voters in nearly all states voted for anti-incumbency.
Exit polls predict that, after a gap of 26 years, the BJP will be in a position to form the government in Uttar Pradesh. He thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh for giving the BJP and its allies “a historic mandate” which he claimed would give a new direction to the Indian polity.
It won only three of the 117 seats in Punjab, where it had been the junior partner in a ruling coalition, while the Congress won 77.
For the past decade two local parties, each with roots in different caste groups, have dominated the state’s confoundingly complex politics. Considering that 90 percent of India’s economy is cash-based, this is was huge decision.
By now, the critics of PM Narendra Modi must have got the answer whether UP like this friendship between Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi. BJP bombarded the other parties in UP with a lethal bomb of a mixture of, “idea, politics, social energies and emotions”, in flawless proportions.
The GFP had, in fact, approached the Congress for a pre-poll alliance, only to be turned down. As well as significant infrastructure spending, his party had vowed to provide a toilet for each household within five years along with a laptop complete with one year’s worth of free internet for the state’s youth.
In the 2014 general elections, however, the BJP captured Uttar Pradesh, winning 71 of the 80 parliamentary seats.
“Just like they did nothing at the Centre for three years, they are going to do nothing in UP as well”. Poll pundits as well as leaders of all the parties are keeping a close watch on the results of the ancient city.
Some of Modi’s key reforms, such as a nationwide sales tax, have come unstuck in the Rajya Sabha where BJP lacks majority. Manipur is a gain, after all, it had won zero seats there last time and this time it is 21 while Congress got 28 – a hung house is likely to result there. Working on this strategy, the BJP allocated around 150 seats to non-Yadav OBCs in UP.
Despite the banknote chaos, Uttar Pradesh voters bestowed their trust in the prime minister’s agenda. Muslims are known for tactical voting, but this time it appears the community has voted for issues. BJP SNIFFS AN OPPORTUNITY Here’s how that could be possible in Goa. Not only did the Hindu-nationalist BJP not field a single Muslim candidate. The prospect of a stronger BJP presence in Parliament will give him a better idea of when to introduce various pieces of legislation and what new initiatives to undertake. More than development, BJP played on the Hindutva sentiments.
