This Is Donald Trump’s Backup if the Republican Health Care Plan Fails
Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress, but it is unclear if they will get enough votes to get the bill through.
The bill, introduced by Representative Pete Sessions (R-Texas), has been given the title of “World’s Greatest Healthcare Plan of 2017”.
The President has thrown his full weight behind a contested plan by House Republicans to replace Obamacare, battling to overcome resistance from the party’s right wing in hopes of meeting a key campaign pledge.
The House Republican leadership’s American Health Care Act, which would overhaul large parts of the United States healthcare system, was introduced this week after years of debate within the GOP.
Armed with a Powerpoint presentation, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan attempted a lecture in a televised press conference Thursday about why Obamacare should be repealed.
Obamacare prohibits health plans from putting annual or lifetime dollar limits on most benefits we receive.
Immediately ends a requirement that individuals have insurance coverage and another rule that requires some businesses to offer coverage to their workers. Trump has also said there would be a transition period for those who purchased coverage on public exchanges to something “better”. “That’s the very definition of ObamaCare Lite”. Much of that has been federally subsidized by the Obamacare expansion, and it would blow a massive hole in the already beleaguered state and county budgets if the federal funding dries up.
Trump has dared lawmakers to vote against the health bill, and earlier this week used a tweet to target Paul for his outspoken opposition to the health care replacement effort-specifically that it would not eliminate government-mandated insurance. Such a move would hurt hospitals, which still would have to treat people who can’t pay.
“I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican, and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid”.
One of the reasons for the uncertainty is because the Congressional Budget Office has not released an analysis of the bill, which would estimate the cost of how this legislation could impact the budget.
Insurance plans will no longer have to cover most care; catastrophic policies will be allowed again.
The proposal is the most comprehensive look yet at how the GOP will approach replacing the health law, also known as Obamacare, which brought coverage to an estimated 20 million people.
“If they have some suggestions that improve predictability, fairness to all the participants – including insurance companies – then we have something to talk about”, she said.
