WikiLeaks To Defend Tech Firms From CIA Hacking Tools
The CIA is also trying to determine if there are other unpublished documents WikiLeaks may have.
The CIA has not confirmed the authenticity of the documents, but officials tell ABC News that they appear authentic.
Upon their release, WikiLeaks said that part one of the documents “already eclipses the total number of pages published over the first three years of the Edward Snowden NSA leaks”. But his offer has left the likes of Google and Apple in a dilemma on how to deal with the anti-secrecy organisation which, the USA government believes, tries “to damage the Intelligence Community’s ability to protect America against terrorists and other adversaries”.
“Companies now find themselves in a hard position: They believe that at least two organizations have access to hacking code that exploits their products – the Central Intelligence Agency and WikiLeaks – but neither one is sharing this software…”
Shortly after the documents were published, Apple and Google said that they have already eliminated numerous potential vulnerabilities, while Samsung and Microsoft said they were aware of the leaks and looking into them.
After WikiLeaks dumped more than 8,000 documents leaked from inside the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence, Apple said it had already fixed most of the exploits the agency had found to hack into iPhones.
Wikileaks has claimed claims the CIA Center for Cyber Intelligence “lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal”, more than several hundred million lines of code that provide “the entire hacking capacity of the CIA”.
Concern about the CIA’s alleged hacking tools is starting to grow among foreign diplomats, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said Thursday he always tries to avoid bringing his cell phone into sensitive meetings to avoid being spied on. “This is playing with our nation’s national security is not something that should be taken lightly under this administration”.
The WikiLeaks could’ve only obtained documents from CIA’s covert hacking program from somebody within the agency, said former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell.
“Protecting consumers’ privacy and the security of our devices is a top priority at Samsung”, a statement from the South Korean electronics giant said. Microsoft stated that it is very well aware about CIA’s hacking tools and is now looking into the matter.
