In the Assembly election results on Saturday, the BJP got 13 seats and the Congress clinched 17 of the 40 seats to emerge as the single largest party in Goa.
After having failed to win a single seat in the 60 member Manipur assembly election, human rights activist Irom Sharmila on Saturday said she had chose to quit politics.
At present, the likelihood of BJP forming its first ever government in the north-eastern state largely hinges on whether its strategists are able to convince one of two legislators to extend their support.
Madhav, the man behind the BJP’s turnaround in Manipur and Assam previous year, said all political parties which have secured votes have an obligation toward the people.
It is the second largest party in both Manipur and Goa, but party chief Amit Shah made it clear in his victory speech that the BJP will attempt to form government in both states. But the party won as many as eight seats in the hills while it lost many seats in the valley which were bagged by the BJP. There were allegations of nepotism in the distribution of tickets which also fuelled rumours that candidates were being selected on payment of hefty sums of money. “We are already in talks with like-minded secular and regional parties”, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Haokip was quoted as saying by PTI.
According to CVoter, Inner Manipur has its votes divided between BJP and Congress (BJP-14 and Congress-15), while the newly-created districts have voted for BJP and not the ruling Congress – BJP 8 seats and Congress 3 seats.
“We are confident of getting the required numbers and stake claim to form government on Monday”, Mr. Lobo said. The Congress may have to be satisfied with just 5 seats here. The current chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh is from Congress who has been leading Manipur assembly for three terms.
Sharmila is also contesting from Khurai.
It is evident that the people were unhappy with the CM who was Minister of Health before who succeeding Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Another prominent Congress victor was state minister Akoijam Mirabai from Patsoi.
The final data of the Election Commission revealed that the party received 36.3% vote share as compared to 35.1% of the Congress. The vote share card can not be played to form a government with those parties who have won seats by defeating BJP candidates, including the heavy-weight ministers.
It now remains to be seen whether the BJP will be able to gather 31 seats to form a government that could deliver on Modi’s electoral promises.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who retained his Thoubal seat by beating his rival BJP candidate L Basanta by a huge margin of 10,470 votes, could not be contacted. “They want peace stability, progress and protection of territorial integrity”.
Besides Congress and BJP candidates who won the 2017 elections the others include: NPF- K Leishiyo, Khashim Vashum, Losii Dikho and Awangbow Newmai. “But I turned them down”, she said, as per the report.
