Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney set for Everton return
Rooney wore No18 – his original squad number at Everton – and replaced former Manchester United team-mate Tom Cleverley with 15 minutes of the game to go.
Duncan Ferguson has praised Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney for agreeing to don an Everton strip for the Scot’s testimonial match against Villarreal on Sunday.
Both players were pivotal figures during their time at Everton, and faced Spanish side Villarreal to honour Ferguson.
Rooney has usually a militant receipt while playing against Everton and started even ignored by professional Sir Alex Ferguson but the ones who hostilities have been stopped today the one-off icon exchanged his red colored for red.
“I was a little bit nervous as I didn’t know what to expect”.
“I enjoyed it. It was nice to come back here and the fans gave me a great reception which I was delighted with”, Rooney said.
“I didn’t know what to expect but it was great for me and my kids, to see me once in an Everton shirt”.
Rooney met his wife Coleen while living in Liverpool as a teenager but his son’s Kai, five, and Klay, two, have only known their father as a hero at Old Trafford rather than of the Gwladys Street Stand.
‘Most importantly it was a big day for Duncan and he really enioyed the game and it was nice to see him back on the pitch again.
And Ferguson himself joined his former teammate up front for the last few minutes, as Everton ended up losing 2-1 to the La Liga side, with Ty Browning scoring the only goal for the home side. I got a great reception and I was delighted with that.
