Browns releasing Robert Griffin III
The Browns have been shopping Osweiler since nearly the minute they acquired him Thursday in a trade with the Texans, along with a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-rounder (188). Apparently, though, the Texans felt similarly, as they pulled off the surprise move of the offseason-getting rid of Osweiler by convincing the Browns to take him in exchange for giving up draft capital.
The deal gives the Browns more assets to perhaps trade for a quarterback such as New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo, and it allows the Texans to clear some salary-cap space to make a run at a starter. Osweiler, a Super Bowl victor with Denver two years ago, moved to Houston Texans last season in a high-profile deal, but he has already been moved on.
The Texans, who are looking to upgrade their quarterback position this year, went 9-7 last year and have the No. 57 overall pick in the second round. He has completed 488 of 815 passes for 5,083 yards with 26 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
Moneyball in baseball is created to find market inefficiencies, and one of those would certainly be how a big quarterback contract can hang around a team’s neck.
Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is on Team Brock Osweiler.
One of those 14 games was noteworthy last season because it was the Browns’ only victory – 20-17 against the Chargers – in a 1-15 season. The move that the team made on the opening day of free agency is one that will probably never be forgotten, and it seems that it’s not even done yet either.
Griffin III just turned 27 years old, but injuries have derailed what looked to be a promising National Football League career.
This will put a premium on salary cap space – just like how things work in the National Basketball Association.
The result: They flipped late-round picks this year, and acquired a second-round pick next year to take on Osweiler’s contract.
The Browns have the capital to easily pull off a trade for Garoppolo. All signs are pointing to Tony Romo being traded to the Texans, especially after this deal, which made it pretty obvious that Houston was gunning for a chance to bring in Romo. This was also a good trade for the Texans.
Cleveland is now trying to trade Osweiler, and will even throw in a fifth-round pick of their own, for a team’s third-round selection, according to Cleveland.com.
