Aaron Rodgers takes to Twitter to express excitement about Martellus Bennett signing
Bennett will join the arsenal of talented Packers pass catchers in 2017.
ESPN’s ever-hustling Adam Schefter says that mission has been accomplished. They signed Martellus Bennett and Kendricks, both pass catching tight ends, in consecutive days.
This will be another stop for the well-traveled veteran.
While Jeffrey was unquestionably a star when he was on the field, he missed four games previous year on a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and most of the season before with injuries. While he did not become a part of another productive two tight end attack, he did his job despite struggling with an ankle injury throughout the season. He played for the New York Giants from 2011-15 and Jacksonville last season. Following that brief stint in NY he really made a name for himself with the Chicago Bears.
Cook, who caught 30 passes for 377 yards and one touchdown but had a significant impact on the offense down the stretch, seemingly was on track to be re-signed before Friday, when talks broke off. A combined seven were selected in the first three rounds the past two years. Just before the onset of free agency, Bennett compared it to “being that girl that’s newly single and fresh on that market”.
Beau Sandland, an undrafted rookie past year, is the only other tight end on the roster. Even if he’s not as athletic as Cook, Bennett has the size (6-foot-6) that makes him a matchup nightmare. He led the Badgers in receptions (43), receiving yards (663) and touchdowns (five) in 2010 where he was a John Mackey award finalist, given to the nation’s best tight end.
With Bennett off the market, Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera not returning and talented, but inconsistent, Clive Walford plateauing at a young age – Bennett would have been the ideal sign for Oakland. Bennett is going to give his new teammates an offensive boost.
