House Health Care Bill Would Hit Low-Income And Elderly Californians Hardest
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price also expressed support for the plan in a letter to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore., and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Tex.
“Republicans will force tens of millions of families to pay more for worse coverage–and push millions of Americans off of health coverage entirely”, said Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-California), the Democratic leader and a staunch supporter of Obamacare.
“That might give him some political capital to use on this health care fight; because this is going to be a battle, and I don’t know if he’s going to be able to win it”, he said.
What this strategy allows is fulfilling the promise of repeal, with enough elements of replacement to keep a sustainable marketplace, at least according to Ryan.
While Obamacare extended federally funded Medicaid coverage to 14.4 million Americans by raising the maximum income eligibility to 138 percent of the poverty level, or $16,394 per year, the GOP plan would phase this expansion out by 2020. But the AHCA would do away with that restriction, allowing insurance companies to charge older Americans “as much as they want”, up to five times as much as the youngest Americans, Vox reported. Also unclear is where Trump stands on numerous details.
National organization including the AARP and the American Hospital Association have come forward to oppose this health care bill – and locally, the Iowa Hospital Association is more than concerned. Photo by Brian Snyder/Reuters. The Republican proposal would repeal that penalty immediately.
Subsidies: It would end the ACA’s form of subsidies for low and middle-income families. The replacement legislation calls for eliminating the individual mandate and the employer mandate.
“The Department of Health and Human Services reports that almost one-third of individuals covered under the Medicaid expansion have a mental health or substance use disorder”. A good number of Americans may have to switch to no- insurance simply because they can not afford to have coverage anymore once the new plan kicks in.
Preventive Care: Finally, the bill would repeal the “essential benefits” required by the ACA.
I believe that every Minnesotan needs affordable insurance coverage. Our state has made tremendous strides ensuring more of our people have access to higher quality health care at lower costs. Republicans lacked the votes to override Obama’s veto, so the law remained in place.
