Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon to ask for second referendum
Some 52 per cent of the United Kingdom electorate voted to leave European Union in the June 2016 vote, but only 38 per cent of voting Scots shared that perspective.
“I am ensuring that Scotland’s future. will be decided by the people of Scotland”, she said.
Shortly after Sturgeon delivered her speech, May responded in an interview with the BBC, in which she said that a referendum would set Scotland “on a course for more uncertainty and division”.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Monday she will move quickly to give Scottish voters a chance to make Scotland an independent country.
Hours after the speech, 10 Downing announced it wouldn’t invoke Article 50 of the European Union treaty to begin the UK’s formal withdrawal process from the EU. May plans to trigger the two-year exit process by the end of March.
The latest poll conducted by Opinium shows that 47 percent of Scots expect that were there to be a second a vote for Scottish independence, it would pass, potentially adding to the political shakeup taking place throughout Europe.
Sterling is 0.45 per cent up against the dollar – unchanged by Ms Sturgeon’s remarks that she was confident of holding and winning a second vote. While May has suggested special deals to protect the benefits of European Union trade for vehicle manufacturers (paywall) and other key industries, talks about special relationship between the European Union and Scotland have been met with a “brick wall of intransigence”, Sturgeon said.
J.K. tried to warn us, folks. This would mean that the SNP would have to win a majority, or given the Greens support for independence-very close to one, after 14 years in power to hold a referendum. “I think that independence would be catastrophic for many people in Scotland”.
Sturgeon hasn’t made this claim, asserting only that there is great warmth for Scotland among European leaders. “The result was decisive and there is no appetite for another referendum”.
It would certainly result in economic uncertainty: Scotland would have to figure out everything from which currency to use, to how to manage trade with the rest of the United Kingdom, and what to do with its share of the national debt.
The comments come after the Brexiteer accused Mrs Sturgeon of “not wanting independence from this referendum at all”.
The Daily Telegraph said she could name the date for a referendum as early as this week, if Theresa May does not agree to her wishes.
“But just to be absolutely clear, I do not think there should be another referendum”.
