Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Issues ‘Not Significant’: Nintendo
The hottest feature the Switch has to offer is it’s basically a small tablet with a 720p screen. You can bet the hackers out there are probably trying to piece together a jailbreak tool or a way to get into the Switch sooner rather than later.
Graphical capability obviously isn’t an issue for the 8-bit-style Shovel Knight, although that game does make me wish the Switch had a proper D-pad when used in portable mode.
The Joy-Cons have highly accurate motion sensors. What this means is that developers, especially indie or the low end of AAA, may have to start thinking about the benefits of producing Switch versions of their games versus the cost of developing them.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, pretty much the only game available for the console (and not cheap at £60) has also been touted as the fastest-selling launch title in Nintendo history, with 89 per cent of Switch buyers picking up the game along with their console. It disconnects midgame occasionally, which can cause major problems in whatever game you’re playing, reports say. Then we have the Joy-Con Grip, while a nice option, still feels small and cramped. We will keep you updated with the latest issues and fixes. Somewhere in the bowels of Nintendo, some hapless group of interns (or, seeing as this is Japan, several self-aware robots with lethal martial arts skills) should’ve been in charge of plugging the Switch into its dock 10,000 times or so, just to see how that affected wear and tear on the system.
Since it holds a direct connection with the device’s innate hardware, there is not much that can be changed significantly in the context of a longer battery life.
The Switch has a kickstand, which lets you play on some surfaces. However, with a little patience, a user could establish a proxy server on the local Wi-Fi network and intercept traffic – forcing the Switch’s browser to a locally hosted web page instead.
The situation is even worse when you consider the Switch’s limited base storage space that makes it hard for owners to download the – apparently more affordable – versions of their favorite games without relying on the Switch’s SD expansion slot.
Don’t worry they’re actually there – Nintendo forces you to play at least four of the initial games first, after which all 28 games will be unlocked.
While official sales numbers haven’t been released, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé that 5 days into the wild, the hybrid console “continues to be the fastest selling system that we’ve ever had here in the USA”. The only way you could have got one was by waking up super early last Friday and standing in line, like my colleague Sophia did – unless you thought ahead and pre-ordered the device.
