Weather: Storm could bring foot or more of snow to NYC

NY a year ago experienced the biggest snowstorm in the city’s history with a record 70 centimetres falling in Central Park in 24 hours.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Watch from 8 a.m.to 12 p.m. Tuesday for areas near the coastline in Brooklyn and Staten Island, and areas along the southern shores of Queens.
In the southern part of the state, including in Bennington and Windham counties, snow is expected to begin developing Monday night and last through Wednesday.
The New York metro area and other regions facing a blizzard watch could experience stronger wind, with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour forecast on Long Island and in parts of southeastern CT, according to The New York Times. It’s expected many more flights will be cancelled in NY and surrounding areas in the coming hours. United Airlines said it would have no operations at Newark or LaGuardia.
Sometimes, a mix of precipitation can mean that the rain melts some of the snow.
The German chancellor’s trip to Washington for talks with President Donald Trump was postponed until March 17, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.
All New York schools were closed and above ground sections of the subway ground to a halt. Examples include food, water, gas, generators, hotels and transportation.
School and work, along with flights and plans, will be canceled, as cities across the Northeast brace for at least one more snowstorm this winter season.
Declaring a state of emergency, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said commuters should expect road closures, delays and cancellations.
Thousands of flights have been cancelled over the next two days, with airports in New York, Boston, Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia hardest hit, according to the tracking service FlightAware. Commuters are encouraged to stay home.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said that approximately 700 National Guard members would be deployed, along with more than 2,000 snow plows to keep up with the storm that was expected to bring a foot or more of snow to some parts of the state.
The Weather Service said there’s a 50 percent chance for snow after 1 a.m. overnight Thursday into Friday, and a 40 percent chance for rain and snow Friday.
