United States deploys attack drones in South Korea amid threats
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit South Korea Friday as part of his first Asia tour since taking office, which will also see him visit Japan and China.
South Korea is not a direct neighbour of China but is divided by the sea and North Korea. “It’s a very reasonable and real response to a very provocative threat that is facing people in South Korea”. But according to The Wall Street Journal, the ban came after Chinese imports of North Korea coal in 2017 had already reached the United Nations annual limit of $400 million.
He would also face conservative ire if he were to delay deployment of a USA missile-defense system. But this sort of tool is what Korea needs to pre-empt a possible crisis to be prompted by a set of external risks – a toughened environment for Korean businesses in China whose economy is slowing, a continuous rise in U.S. interest rates and growing military threats from Pyongyang. Many Chinese companies reportedly voluntarily cancelled business trips to South Korea and vowed to purge Lotte products from their stores. He also is relying on the fact that, given the high prestige of China vis-à-vis the United States, and given that the PRC is perceived as capable of lowering North Korea’s apparent impetuosity, Kim is relying on China’s increased role in ensuring a de-escalation of the US-North Korea conflict. Yet the Chinese fear pushing too hard and causing North Korea to collapse.
“The Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered all servicemen to raise their monitoring and alertness against North Korea”, said a military official. Washington refused to even consider what it said would be rewarding Pyongyang’s bad behavior with cancellation of legitimate defensive exercises. “You need the mother to reprimand the child”. “At a time when the USA administration’s policy review on North Korea is in its final stages, and our joint approach to the North is materializing through meetings of (recent) foreign ministers and nuclear envoys, Tillerson’s visit to Korea is very important and timely”.
Last week, China-pop singer Xie Tianming put out a syrupy music video lament called the “Chant of Love” on the deployment of THAAD to South Korea to defend against the North Korean missile threat.
What is disturbing is the future of South Korea’s current political situation.
Seoul does not have firm evidence that China has retaliated against it for deploying a United States missile defence system, so no action has been taken against Beijing, South Korea’s Finance Minister said yesterday.
Meanwhile, there have been no official statements on curbing trade relations with South Korea.
Thae also said Kim Jong Un is trying to achieve parity with South Korea’s relatively more powerful military with his nuclear weapons program.
Before the new Trump administration develops a sure footing regarding some hot-button global affairs issues, Kim may not risk escalating his ballistic missile tests.
Together, we’ve gone far. A search for “Lotte” on the social networking service Weibo on March 13 quickly turned up videos of Lotte items being cleared off of store shelves and bulletin board posts urging a boycott of Lotte and South Korean products in general.
“By being quiet, she’s making it loud and clear that she won’t accept the court’s ruling”, said Yul Shin, a professor at Seoul’s Myongji University.
“We can not wait forever”, he said. “We can certainly expect more vulgarity and bluster to come, followed by more nuclear and missile tests and laying the blame on the USA for the drone deployment”, Lee said.
A report released previous year by the Korea Economic Research Institute, a private think tank, suggested the country’s foreign exchange reserves, $367.9 billion at the time, was far from enough to cope with another bout of global financial crisis. The North’s missile launches signify an extremely unsafe provocation that could cause damage to fishing boats and others.
Tillerson’s trip comes a little more than a week after the government of Kim Jong-un carried out the launch of four ballistic missiles that landed in the Sea of Japan. Should the North attack the South, could we not honor our treaty obligations with air and naval power offshore?
The U.S. military has sought to address this tension via “public diplomacy”. Trump has given son-in-law Jared Kushner and strategist Steve Bannon outsized roles in foreign policy and proposed a 37 per cent cut to the State Department’s budget. If one assumes that such a “decapitation” isn’t meant literally (although that’s how the Internet is interpreting it) but in the nuclear-warfare sense, then this would involve the US aiming to take out Kim Jong-Un’s weapon capabilities in a first-strike attack.
“We should complain about what needs to be complained about and we should make diplomatic efforts to persuade China”, he said.
