Eagles bring back QB Foles on 2-year deal
Working on adding depth and talent to their roster so far this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have brought back quarterback Nick Foles on a two-year contract. Between Chase Daniel and then Foles, the Chiefs have had an experienced backup to starter Alex Smith in their four seasons with Andy Reid as head coach.
Foles was a third-round draft pick by the Eagles in 2012. ESPN reported that $7 million will be guaranteed. Daniel played just one series last season after signing a three-year, $21 million contract prior to the 2016 season. His breakout game was in Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders: Foles threw for 406 yards and an NFL-record-tying seven touchdowns. The team released an official announcement regarding the move Monday evening.
The big question for the Eagles now: What does this signing mean for Chase Daniel? He wanted out of St. Louis/Los Angeles when the franchise did not see Foles as the answer when they drafted quarterback Jared Goff with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Daniel was supposed to fight for the starting job last season, but the Eagles chose to give the role to Wentz.
“Bradford wasn’t better in the new system, and Foles was further damaged with no shot to succeed with the Rams” shaky supporting cast.
The Jets could be an attractive destination for Daniel, who is familiar with Jets offensive coordinator John Morton’s approach.
I can’t blame Daniel for wanting to start. He’s attempted just 78 lifetime passes, completing 51, with one TD and one interception. The Eagles also netted a fifth-round selection in the trade. Logan on Monday signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.
