Bound American Airlines flight diverted to Jacksonville

More than 125 flights out of and into Raleigh-Durham International Airport were canceled Tuesday as a snowstorm plastered the Northeast and closed airports there. Providence and Manchester both reached past the 40% mark for cancellations, and almost one quarter of Hartford flights were cancelled. Restrictions vary by airline.

Southwest canceled about 900 flights, while American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines each cancelled more than 500.

RIC canceled eight flights on Monday – five of those were to or from Chicago.

– More than 5,000 flights from around the country were canceled due to the nor’easter, leaving many travelers grounded.

Meteorologists were calling for snowfall totals as high as 20 inches in New York City from the storm’s start late Monday through Tuesday evening. Some areas were warned to prepare for up to two feet of snow and strong winds going up to 50 miles per hour. There are a number of factors in which the storm also could hit the airport’s bottom line, at a cost of up to a $60,000 per day. “They have no rooms and everybody’s sitting around”, she said.

After all, airlines don’t want passengers to weather the storm stranded with it’s planes and crew stuck at an airport.

“Airline passengers are strongly urged to call their carrier before going to the airports today or later this week and also should not go to the airports unless they have a reservation”, Port Authority officials said in a statement.

Southern portions of Minnesota got more than 9 inches of snow in some areas.
