‘This Is Us’ cast breaks down season finale’s unexpected turns

Aside from finding out how they met in the ’70s, we also saw Jack and Rebecca in the ’90s during the first show of her tour. The most impactful season finales in television history have left fans wondering throughout the hiatus, exemplified best by the infamous “Who shot J.R.?” summer of “Dallas”. But Sullivan wants to keep the suspense about Kate’s guilt going: “If we stretch out the reveal for seven or eight seasons, like that Neil Patrick Harris show, we can call it How I Killed My Father”.

It was a decidedly odd finale choice to have the episode exist nearly entirely in the past, with very little time devoted to Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz) or Kevin (Justin Hartley), but we suppose there was a lot of ground to cover, given how long Jack’s death has been looming.

Will the season finale of This Is Us finally put us out of our misery tonight and reveal how Jack Pearson, aka The World’s Greatest Dad, died?

“You’re all going to have to wait a little while longer (to find out how Jack dies)”, Ventimiglia told the audience during the panel discussion. Jack stumbled drunk into her club performance and punched her ex-boyfriend and fellow band member Ben (Sam Trammell). Ben tries to calm her down and then tries to kiss her. Jack finishes his drink and then goes to search for Rebecca.

The flashbacks work wonderfully well in showing how Jack and Rebecca turned it around for each other, meeting at the right time on the right night and going on to have the family that America fell in love with hook, line and sinker.

Although that speech was epic, Jack still leaves the house, but gives us hope that love will prevail. But it wasn’t a throwaway episode, either.

This Is Us pulled off a rare feat: It pissed people off by not killing off a character.

While some may have thought the climax of the episode would be a classic TV-style disaster, cliffhanger or the aforementioned reveal, “This Is Us” subverted expectations.

In the closing minutes of the finale, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) came to the realization that he wanted to adopt a kid – which naturally took Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) by surprise. Kevin (Justin Hartley) got a redo on his opening night.

Rebecca told Jack that she had been a stay-at-home mother instead of pursuing her dreams. Jack’s on his last leg working odd jobs, putting up with his father, and plotting bar heists to make a quick buck. That doesn’t mean that she’s on Team Jack. He was right, ‘ she scolds him, referring to Jack’s warning of her ex’s ulterior motives. Rebecca suggested that Jack stay with Miguel (Jon Huertas) to give them some air.

Rebecca hears the violent brawl and angrily drives a drunken Jack home. “I have no life”.

She said you two purposely kept your distance, literally and figuratively. As the argument lost steam, Jack headed toward the door.

“The next time you tell me you love me, make sure you’re not just doing it out of habit.”

Where does he stand when it comes to the loving relationship of Jack and Rebecca? These questions have remained unanswered.

I love the mother that you are. Or just talk about it, you know? And that you laugh with your entire face. I look at her character’s desire, as a 40-some-year-old woman that has always been driven by performing and singing, her kids have grown up, her husband’s working, she does need something for herself. After it ended, she went to sing on an open mic. only for her to lock eyes with Jack, just as he entered the establishment, intent on robbing it. You were my big break.

Kevin has been trying to make amends, he has been trying to get back together with his former wife and childhood sweetheart Sophie.

And there will certainly be more tears.
