Speaker Paul Ryan slams Trump in leaked recording
“You can’t underscore how important this is to the speaker”, said Matt Mackowiak, a Republican strategist and president of the Potomac Strategy Group.
Ryan insisted that despite slashing funding for Medicaid and vastly reducing the assistance low-income people receive for paying insurance premiums, that health insurance under the GOP-proposed American Health Care Act, will become more accessible.
“I am not going to defend Donald Trump – not now, not in the future”, Mr Ryan said in the recording released by Breitbart. So there’s no way you can compete with, on paper, a government mandate with coverage.
MARA LIASSON, BYLINE: Hi, Steve. He says social media isn’t doing some politicians any favors because a small number of people can basically “troll you into oblivion”. Universal coverage is not the Republican’s goal. It’s more choices. It’s more markets. He sounds like he’s a real Reaganite conservative on that. As it stands under ObamaCare, they aren’t just not competing but also not participating.
Ryan, after much hedging, had already quietly endorsed Trump in June.
INSKEEP: Yeah, he even used the phrase health insurance for everybody. The hardest hit would be low-income people in their 50s and 60s, especially those living in rural areas, who do not get employer-based insurance. The White House says he is in sell mode. Can he sell this legislation? “And obviously a lot has happened since then”. Is there a backlash?
However, Ryan also said that as the bill moves through the legislative process, “we’re making all kinds of improvements and refinements that we think make this bill better”.
Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price quickly took issue with the numbers, a CNN reporter tweeted. He spoke with NBC. Todd’s worry is that without this subsidy effect, older Americans’ healthcare costs-and their insurance premiums-will skyrocket. “Senators who have spent the last couple of weeks grandstanding against this reality are going to need to decide whether they want to get serious and get this done, or be the ones responsible for keeping Obamacare in place”, another aide said.
People’s Action is a national organization of more than a million people across 30 states working for economic, racial, gender and climate justice – and to ensure everyone a voice in our political system. If the goal is to provide affordable health care to the greatest number of people, then major health care organizations disagree with Stefanik.
For all its fire-breathing coverage, Breitbart seems to have overlooked President Trump’s support of the Ryan bill.
LIASSON: That’s right. They are.
He said that “repeal and replace” is what Republicans ran on in the 2016 election, and this bill is a “very good start” to meet that goal. The second part is a series of individual free-market reform bills to be passed separately as a result of limitations imposed by Senate rules. You will put your Republican majority in the House at risk.
THE FACTS: Republicans gloss over reality when they make this argument.
