Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey ecstatic over Foxes Champions League progress
Despite being thoroughly outplayed in the first leg, Leicester somehow managed to come away with only a 2-1 defeat.
The Foxes controversially dismissed popular manager Ranieri in February, just nine months after he had steered the club to an historic Premier League title triumph.
Craig Shakespeare, who has been given the manager’s role until the end of the season, has reinvigorated the players since replacing Claudio Ranieri and, if he can keep their current run going, a top-half finish may still be possible. Sevilla are a quality side and still start as clear favourites to progress, as Shakespeare will have reiterated during a three-day warm-weather training trip to Dubai last week.
Sevilla, who have won the Europa League in each of the past three seasons, had Samir Nasri sent off after receiving a second yellow card following an altercation with Jamie Vardy, who was also booked for his part in the confrontation.
Well, they go marching on towards their second improbable fairytale in successive years. In the 79th minute, Schmeichel, whose heroics had kept Leicester in this contest in the first leg, clattered through Vitolo as he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper in the box.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Juventus have never faced Leicester in a competitive game, but the Turin side have drawn English sides Fulham, Manchester City and Chelsea – twice – in the last decade.
“I’m lost for words”, Albrighton told BBC.com.
“These fans deserve a big European night”.
“We set the game plan out tremendously, goals change games and that put us in the driver’s seat and we drove on from there”.
“We have to recover as soon as possible because we have a crucial match on Tuesday”, said Stevan Jovetic, who scored Sevilla’s equalizer against Leganes.
“Incredible. I can’t quite believe it”. He went on an epic rant about the Leicester players on TV3 Sport after their victory over Sevilla and their behavior since winning the league. We did it and we proved a lot of people wrong.
“We will take whoever comes”.
“He helps us enjoy our football”.
Since Ranieri’s departure, Leicester have produced back-to-back 3-1 wins over Liverpool and Hull City, easing their fears of relegation from the Premier League. The morale seems to have changed.
With the last two Round of 16 matchups being played on Wednesday, the draw for the quarterfinals will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.
