Magnitude 4.1 earthquake shakes Bay Area
Authorities say a magnitude 4.1 natural disaster has rattled the San Francisco Bay Area, but no injuries or property damage is reported. A 7-Eleven employee was working at the time.
California, which sits along a series of seismic faults, is forecast to experience a much more powerful quake at some point, but scientists do not know when it might come or how strong it might measure.
Fremont is at the southern end of the Hayward Fault, which saw its most serious quake in 1868. “It woke up nearly everybody in the house”, said Albert Dicochea, a Fremont resident. “Since then, there have been 14 aftershocks, the largest which was a magnitude 2.7”, explained AnneMarie Baltay with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Michelle Jackson in Niles Canyon, just northeast of Fremont said “some things fell off shelves”, but no damage was reported. There were some delays on BART. There were a total of eight aftershocks following the main quake – as of 3:27 a.m. SF Gate reports.
BART experienced 30 minute delays at about 4:30 a.m., as trains performed track inspections.
The USGS says the quake struck about 8.1km (roughly 5 miles) below the surface this morning.
