Hasbro reveals new Monopoly tokens
The winning tokens, celebrating World Monopoly Day tomorrow, are a tyrannosaurus rex, rubber ducky and penguin – a selection just as seemingly random as the original pieces – which will join the iconic Monopoly race vehicle, top hat, Scottie dog, cat and battleship. A golden Tyrannosaurus Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin will replace the retiring silver-colored thimble, wheelbarrow, and boot.
After a worldwide vote as part of Monopoly Token Madness, which allowed people to vote among 64 classic and new tokens, the popular rent-based board game will feature an all-new line-up.
Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming, said the new tokens would be available in Monopoly games sold in September.
The Animal group: Dog, cat, penguin, T. Rex, rubber duck. However, the thimble, boot and wheelbarrow came out on top with 81,000, 83,000 and 66,000 votes, respectively. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a rain boot got the least amount of support with a measly 7,239 votes.
An interesting theme has emerged from those winners; traditionally, Monopoly tokens have been somewhat less organic in nature. They beat out hopefuls including a computer, bunny slipper, monster truck and the crying-laughing emoji face.
Penguin Token: Waddling into the game in seventh place in overall votes, the Penguin token is the new style muse for Mr. MONOPOLY. The classic hat and vehicle came next, with the ducky, cat, penguin and battleship rounding out the top list. In fact, the Scottish Terrier led the contest with 212,476 votes. The rubber ducky, meanwhile, is the product of a poor baby, whose parents can’t afford the organic soy-made rubber alternative. The thimble and boot were among the pieces added in 1933.
