Duke ousted from NCAA Tournament in 88-81 loss to SC
Adebayo had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Allen delivered seven points and two assists in helping Duke to an 18-14 lead.
The affected events include this year’s Division I Men’s Basketball Championship first and second rounds that had been scheduled to be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on Friday and Sunday.
Miami, Fla., scored the game’s first 10 points against Michigan State before the eighth-seeded Hurricanes fell by 20. They fell to 7th-seeded SC in the Round of 32 after the Gamecocks dominated the second half en route to an 88-81 win. They kept up that pace in blowing past the 15th-seeded Trojans (22-15). The Gamecocks, averaging 17 points above their season average in two tournament games, are headed to their first Sweet 16 in school history.
Turns out, the Blue Devils were both the kind of team that can post 13 wins over top-50 RPI teams but also lose to one of the more unimposing No. 7 seeds in recent memory.
They led 60-53 with less than nine minutes to play, resulting in Duke’s second timeout of the half.
Felder had played well, Sunday and throughout the season, but these were going to be the biggest 205 seconds of his life.
We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.
A Brooklyn, New York, native, the 5-10 Felder came to SC to attend Indian Land High School his freshman year and then returned to New York. The Gamecocks won the game at the foul-line, hitting 23-28 free throws.
Ian Baker and Braxton Huggins each scored 19 points for New Mexico State (28-6).
Dorsey also tied the game with a 3 with 1:45 remaining on the way to 27 points before teammate Dillon Brooks took a charge on the other end for OR (31-5). Carolina got a stop and took possession with the shot clock off, but Thornwell missed from 3 with six seconds left and MU led 40-39 at halftime.
Sure, they’re cheering because Duke lost, and America will soon show more interest in Jayson Tatum’s draft stock and mocking Luke Kennard than in the undergrads swimming in the fountain in front of the Thomas Cooper Library tonight.
It recovered from a 15-point deficit by going on a 19-3 run in the seven-plus minutes of its 76-71 opening win over No. 12 UNC Wilmington. Nick Ward also finished in double figures with 13 points and Joshua Langford had 10 for the Spartans.
– Sunday’s NCAA Tournament games at Bon Secours Arena have turned into the ACC/SEC Challenge. Brynton Lemar added 17 and Siler Schneider 10 in the loss. Two buckets from the left block established a 29-26 Gamecock advantage, but the Sun Devils responded by banking in a 3-pointer from the right side to even the tally at 29 with under four minutes to play in the period. But the No. 2 seed Blue Devils are well-prepared for the hostile Greenville, SC crowd. But there was only one bid from the ACC back then, and my senior year (of 1969-1970 when the Gamecocks went 25-3) is well-documented. “They were allowed to play really physical tonight”.
The Cowboys never led again.
Facing the end of their season and, for much of the roster, the potential end of their college career, the players fought tears as they answered questions from the media. Now, they’re looking to advance to the Elite Eight with another victory. The Gamecocks used a huge second half to blow past the Golden Eagles and win their first NCAA Tournament game since 1973.
The Blue Devils have totaled a 4-0 record all-time against No. 10 seeds and won 14 in a row at home in NCAA play versus seeds 10 or higher.
The game will be televised live on ESPN2 with Clay Matvick (PXP) and Christy Winters-Scott (Color) calling the action. Louisville was making its first postseason appearance since 2015 after sitting out last year because of a one-year, school-imposed postseason ban for alleged recruiting violations. Adebayo clinched it by blocking Landry Shamet’s 3-pointer shot at the buzzer.
And it was a bigger challenge than most expected.
Carolina started the fourth strong to take their first lead since early in the second quarter.
But then USC found their offense in the second half.
