Described by Drake as a “playlist to give you a collection of songs that become the soundtrack to your life”, it was hard to know what to expect from the release. The 22-track set could score over 275,000 streaming equivalent album units, according to Billboard. And these aren’t the clinical pop tracks of Views. However, More Life doesn’t stop at Toronto.

So it seems the move to stream on more than one platform paid off, after deciding not to stick to just Apple Music like for his last album.

Drake subsequently confirmed the project’s release date on Instagram.

It’s clear that Drake has hit a high-note with More Life, and that streaming is the preferred play mode; however, one has to wonder how Apple’s global count can be nearly 29 million streams greater than those reported by Spotify when Apple has a paid subscriber base that is less than half its competitor’s 50M paids.

Drizzy also appears to reference their age gap and the buzz of a young, fresh relationship with the lyric, “This s**t feels like teenage fever / I’m not scared of it, she ain’t either” and tbh the fact that they’re now no longer “dating” (or whatever it was) makes us feel a bit sad inside. (Streaming services pay artists at a set rate per song played.) This means we might see many other artists in the future collaborating on music in the style of More Life.

Maybe Drake’s honesty, his refusal to be labelled, to stick to one genre and to fall into stereotypes are the secret ingredients which make him the global success that he is. Like in Views, Drake is still plagued by the alienation of being at the top of the music industry, and he remains skeptical of his peers and ex-girlfriends. That conversation peaked at around 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night when roughly 5,700 tweets were coming in per minute about the new project.

Hate it or love it, Drake’s latest project leaves no confusion, he’s now a man of many hats and he wears them all, never quite fusing the sounds but hopping between all of them. Like always, people far and wide ate up what Drake was serving. And based on what he has already spent four releases divulging, how much more to his life is there?

And, after some controversy, More Life finally includes a Drake and Kanye West collaboration titled “Glow”. It shows him using the same conversation topics to say the same thing. However, it could also be argued that any publicity is good publicity and undoubtedly, “More Life” will bring the genre to more ears. The hip-hop artist has hit up Miami amid ample More Life-inspired emojis taking over his social media pages.
