Iron Fist co-creator defends the show against whitewashing controversy
Clearly, Dhawan’s acting talent and physical prowess were the main reasons he landed the role of Iron Fist’s foe Davos – aka the Steel Serpent – in the martial arts series. Give it a watch, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Have you seen Arrow? The more loudly you proclaim how “woke” you are, the more currency you have. Either of those Fridays feel like logical release dates for The Defenders, with the former suggesting Netflix and Marvel will go with just three months between shows and The Punisher could arrive in the typical September period, while the latter would hint at giving the show more room to breathe and perhaps signal that Frank Castle’s showcase would be coming somewhere around November. For the first four episodes, the “Iron Fist” that viewers will see the most of is the corporate rule of the Meachum’s, while Danny tries his very best to convince everyone that he is, in fact, legit.
The cover of “Iron Fist” #1 from 1975. As with previous Netflix series, we’ll be reviewing an episode a day highlighting the characters, reference points and easter eggs we spotted. She’s still going to be Jessica Jones – that is not going to change.
Mike Colter is unlikely to appear as Luke Cage now that he is busy with his own series.
“I just think some people have too much time on their hands, I guess”, Thomas said of the backlash. But in all things “not giving a damn”, Thomas didn’t give a damn. It’s not Danny Rand, the Living Weapon.
Lewis Tan has one of the best fight scenes in “Iron Fist”, if not the best.
Then there’s Danny’s origins. But I thought at least I had a shot – I’m half white and I do martial arts and I could easily play that role. “I think Colleen is more normal”. He’s incredibly boring. He lacks a compelling story. “You can argue about Tarzan, you can argue about nearly any character who came up then [and] is bound to be not quite PC by some later standard or other”, Thomas said. Only her romantic relationship with Danny felt forced.
As great fighters as The Defenders are, Clarie is still the most important. None of the shows were flawless, after all, and Iron Fist hasn’t yet become the chore that Luke Cage and Jessica Jones became in their second halves.
However, as Madame Gao told her, she is in for a world of pain. Well, we could have done that too.
Following Up: The last seasons of “Daredevil” and “Iron Fist” ended with connections to the Hand that will obviously be resolved in “The Defenders”, but everyone’s cliffhangers will be dealt with, according to showrunner Marco Ramirez. Does she have powers?
Now let’s get to the nitty gritty. Now if something is really racist or degrading to a sex or race, an ethnic group or something like that, that’s something else, but Iron Fist isn’t that and never has been. Danny is just so uncultured.
I mean, with those fists of fury basically he kind of has to, right?
Claire’s appearance in this episode was pretty odd, though. In the end Marvel made a decision to stick with Rand’s original identity, casting Jones. The good thing about Marvel is they already have strong female characters but what they were missing was a normal woman. But in the Netflix series, he’s become more than that, and Danny Rand could have been too. The narrative fails to show us anything other than his white identity, and cops out of visualizing the struggle that comes with being homeless in Central Park or what it’s like to grow up without parents or have your home stripped from your fingertips or be thrown into an unfamiliar place with new cultural norms. It’s just an adventure story. Luke Cage tends bar and sweeps hair. And when Colleen dips into a bit of NY underground cage fighting, her regret about using her skills illicitly to earn money grounds Colleen in an emotional struggle that’s engaging to the audience, an internal turmoil rarely shared by the show’s titular hero. As for Rand? “Don’t worry about trashing another one”. However, we know that it’s supposed to come out this summer.
