Spicer: ‘We Weren’t Asking’ Freedom Caucus For Deal Over ACA Repeal Bill
GOP leaders can’t lose more than 22 Republican votes if the bill is to pass.
Three other Pennsylvania House Republicans also have said they plan to vote “no” on the bill: Reps. Lawmakers who vote for the bill will have access to AFP’s resources, but not as much as those who oppose AHAC. Also, the Obamacare taxes for those who don’t get insurance would phase out this year instead of 2018.
The Trump administration is now short the votes needed to repeal and replace on Obamacare in a vote that could define Donald Trump’s presidency.
Despite the amendment, House Freedom Caucus leaders, including Meadows, said on Monday that these changes were not enough to win over the group.
Republicans fear that failure to pass the bill will threaten the rest of Trump’s agenda, including tax cuts and increases in military and infrastructure spending. “You do not bring up your bill just to be spiteful on the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act”. Some want to see benefits such as maternity care, emergency room visits, screening and vaccines repealed; others are concerned their constituents would be unable to afford health insurance under the new plan.
The AHCA shares similarities with Obamacare, including requiring companies to provide insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions and providing subsidies for people to purchase insurance on the individual market in the form of tax credits. In a danger sign for Republicans, a Quinnipiac University poll found that people disapprove of the GOP legislation by 56 percent to 17 percent, with 26 percent undecided. The same poll showed 20% felt Obamacare should be repealed in total and 50% in part.
Caucus chairman Mark Meadows told The Hill, prior to the bill’s postponement: “The opposition is still strong”.
Rush had planned to return to Chicago early Friday morning because “we’ve got family who are arriving [Thursday] to mourn her passing”. He’s moved this a very long way.
Some House Republicans have grown frustrated with the demands of their colleagues in the Freedom Caucus.
“I think we have plenty of time to make this happen”, he said. Short of support, GOP leaders looked to President Donald Trump to close the deal with a crucial bloc of conservatives, in the first major legislative test of his young presidency.
The Koch brothers, two of the biggest financial backers of the conservative movement, have opposed the legislation and pledged to support Republicans who defy Mr Trump and their party leadership.
For weeks, conservatives had threatened that they had enough votes to sink the bill, which they believe did not do enough to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
At noon Thursday, Rush told NBC 5 he was on his way to Washington, saying he felt his vote was needed.
The plan – known officially as The American Health Care Act (AHCA) – was the subject of last-minute wheeling and dealing in Washington on Wednesday night ahead of a scheduled House vote on Thursday as GOP leaders tried to sway skeptics in the party. They left without reaching a deal.
Despite prior disagreements with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), Trump threw his full support behind the law, meeting with the dissenters from the Freedom Caucus on Thursday morning. “That sounds like Obamacare”, Graham said.
