Chinese national injured in London terrorist attack
Masood, armed with two kitchen knives, fatally stabbed a police officer before being shot dead himself.
“We have made two further significant arrests overnight”, counter-terrorism commander Mark Rowley said, confirming that there are now nine people in total in custody over the attack.
Security at Britain’s parliament was under review on Thursday after a terror attack in the shadow of Big Ben but lawmakers spoke proudly of a remarkably open policy for public access as part of democracy.
“Our working assumption is that he was inspired by worldwide terrorism”, said Rowley of London’s Metropolitan Police.
“We should be clear first of all that an attacker attempted to break into parliament and was shot dead within 20 yards of the gates”, the prime minister told MPs.
At least 50 people from at least dozen were injured in Tuesday’s attack, with 31 needing hospital treatment, police said.
She was on a tour bus on the bridge at the time.
The Metropolitan Police said two men, aged 27 and 58, both from Birmingham where attacker Khalid Masood was living, are still in custody for questioning under the Terrorism Act.
“To be explicit, at this stage we have no specific information about further threats to the public”, says Met Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Rowley.
Commentators pointed out the terror group has a record of opportunistically claiming attacks and said it was significant the statement did not appear to claim it had directed the strike.
As of Friday morning, ISIS had provided no evidence of prior communications with or support of Masood.
“Masood is not atypical in being a British-born convert with a criminal record”. It is said he used a number of aliases and was known to police.
He also appears to have been convicted of a knife crime in 2003 in Eastbourne.
“What I can confirm is that the man was British born and that – some years ago – he was once investigated in relation to concerns about violent extremism”, May said.
The IS group has been responsible for numerous bloody attacks around the globe and has specifically called for Western followers to carry out this kind of attack in their own countries, though the group has also claimed events later found to have no clear links to it. “He was normal, in fact friendly, because we spent possibly five or 10 minutes talking to him about his background”, Sabeur Toumi told Sky News.
Masood stayed in the Preston Park Hotel on the outskirts of Brighton on the night before the attack.
The Daily Mail newspaper said he was brought up by his single mother in the town of Rye on England’s south coast, later converting to Islam and changing his name. Among the items seized were the trouser press and the toilet paper holder.
The neighbour said her experience of him was of a “nice man”.
“I just saw a vehicle go out of control, and just go into pedestrians on the bridge”, a woman who gave her name as Bernadette told Sky News.
“Those evil and twisted individuals who tried to destroy our shared way of life will never succeed and we condemn them”, Mayor Sadiq Khan said in an address to the crowd.
