DEVELOPING NOW: At least 15 shot, 1 killed at Cincinnati nightclub
A spokeswoman says five people remain hospitalized after a weekend shootout at a Cincinnati nightclub that left a man dead and 15 people injured.
What the fight was about or who was involved remains unknown. Roof told the police that he wanted to start a race war, Huffington Post reported. No arrests have been made.
Dan Hils, president of Cincinnati’s Fraternal Order of Police, said the situation could have been worse if not for the four off-duty police officers keeping an eye on the club’s parking lot.
“To the victims, what difference does it make?” Spikes was a father and junior college student who came to the club often, they said.
The Cincinnati Police Department Homicide Unit was called to Cameo Night Club, a large, warehouse-style venue on Kellogg Avenue near the Ohio River, at about 2:20 a.m.
Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate tweeted that there was only one reported shooter, however, police were investigating whether others were involved.
Kelly Martin of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center confirmed to NBC News that the hospital received eight patients. She says two people were in critical condition and another two were listed in stable condition.
Neudigate told WLWT that it’s one of the worst shootings he has seen in his almost 30 years with the police department.
Captain Kimberly Williams, the district’s police commander, said there had been “multiple problems” at the club before.
According to police, the Cameo Night Club does have officers who provide extra security.
Cameo Night Club describes itself on its Facebook page as providing entertainment and excitement to the Tri-State.
On February 22, an Indian engineer was killed and two others were injured after an American navy veteran opened fire on people in a crowded bar in Kansas City while yelling “terrorist” and “get out of my country”. “Once I heard the third shot – I didn’t know whether it was coming from outside, someone was shooting at the club, or whether it was coming from inside”.
Hours after the shooting, the suspect was still at large, and police did not have a good description, in part because witnesses were reluctant to cooperate, Williams told WCPO.
Isaac identified the deceased as 27-year-old O’Bryan Spikes and said 15 others were injured, with some already treated and released from hospitals.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich took to Twitter to offer his condolences to the victims and his full support of the investigation.
