Friday Permit Allows Keystone Pipeline to Proceed
Despite Trump’s repeated insistence that Keystone and new pipelines would be built with American steel, the White House confirmed earlier this month that Keystone will not, since it was considered already under construction. That state has been a battleground for activists and local landowners looking to stop the pipeline over concerns that any spills would contaminate the massive Ogallala Aquifer or other ecosystems in the environmentally unique Sand Hills region. Opposition emerges in Nebraska.
Notley added that while it’s not her place to talk about the concerns of First Nations and others in the USA who oppose the project, Calgary-based TransCanada is “working very hard to accommodate the concerns that have been raised”. It’s not coming to the United States.
Premier Rachel Notley says the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline will have an immediate impact on Alberta’s economy, and eventually allow access to new and existing markets. The State Department has estimated that once built, the pipeline will employ about 35 people.
