Pochettino says Tottenham can use one thing to aid their title challenge
Tottenham Hotspur must learn from last season’s poor late form as they attempt to chase down Premier League leaders Chelsea in the closing weeks of the campaign, manager Mauricio Pochettino has said.
Spurs were given a glimpse of hope that the Premier League title race is back on after Chelsea slipped to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Pochettino says that the gap is still “a massive difference”, but he has suggested that “nothing is impossible” between now and the end of the season.
“It is tough to compete and win every game in the Premier League”, Pochettino told a news conference on Monday. Belief is the most important thing in football.
While quality plays an important role in any team’s continued success, Pochettino stresses just how crucial belief, faith and a squad’s ability to fight and persevere is. “It doesn’t change our ideas, our philosophy, our methods”, Conte said. It was very odd last season.
“We are more interested than anyone to win titles. Another hard game.” Fourth-placed City need the points themselves as they look to cement Champions League qualification via a top-four finish.
■ TOTTENHAM could be short in midfield against Swansea tomorrow after Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama went off against Burnley with ankle and back injuries respectively.
Spurs might have taken the lead inside the first 40 seconds when Son was teed up on the edge of the Swansea box, but Federico Fernandez blocked his shot and Alfie Mawson completed the clearance. “It won’t be easy because they are a very good team”.
“He is a very good prospect, a player who is dynamic and aggressive”.
Prior to picking up the injury in the FA Cup win over Millwall, the England global had scored 14 goals in 13 games, and it looks as though upcoming games with Swansea City and Watford will come too soon for him.
Pochettino said “winning titles is not like going to the market and buying a pen” and added: “In the end, if we achieve the top four it is good for us”.
He provided crosses for Fernando Llorente to score in crucial wins over Liverpool and Burnley and has helped Swansea climb one point and one place outside the relegation zone. But all that matters is getting three points. We avoided a lot of crosses into our box. “But we have to find a solution to win the game”. “I am very confident in us”.
