Wife snaps unhappy Day back into Masters fray
There’s no shortage of storylines among the players in the hunt.
Jordan Spieth hits on the 12th hole during the third round of the Masters golf tournament Saturday, April 8, 2017, in Augusta, Ga.
Spieth, the 23-year-old Texan who shot 75 to open the Masters, including an ugly nine on the 15th hole, followed his 69 on Friday with a smooth 68 on Saturday to play himself to nearly the very top of the leaderboard.
And that’s only the start.
Spieth, who has finished second, first and second in three Masters appearances, is in a three-way tie for fourth at 4 under with UNLV products Charley Hoffman and Ryan Moore, who will be paired together Sunday. One of the “others” came from Danny Willett, who became the first defending champion since Mike Weir in 2004 to miss the cut, mostly because of the snowman he took on No. 1 Friday.
Scott, 36, shot 3-under-par 69 on Saturday at Augusta National to push himself up the leaderboard and into position for a second green jacket. This is a place I’d dearly love to be part of history here.
The only Masters champion who wasn’t in the top 10 after 54 holes was Art Wall Jr.in 1959, tied for 13th.
Charl Schwartzel, who boat-raced the field to win the 2011 Masters with four finishing birdies, lurks ominously for the leaders at three under. But Spieth was the man shooting the low score, climbing the leaderboard and certainly getting the treatment of a special player from CBS.
“I certainly know anything can happen on Sunday”, said Spieth, referring to his collapse previous year. He had a chance for birdie on No. 7, but the putt stopped 10 inches from the hole.
“And at the same time, I’ve been on both sides of it now, and I like the winning side better”, Spieth said. And he rode that putter Saturday – right up until the 16th, where he dunked his tee shot in the pond, dropping him 2 strokes behind the leaders.
Adam Scott has been sneaky all week. Another shot back is 2011 victor Charl Schwartzel. Lee Westwood still is in contention at 1-under, as his Thomas Pieters, who also is 1-under.
“There’s wonderful storylines (heading into the last round)”, said Rose, whose best Masters finish was a tie for second behind Spieth in 2015.
“I wished I could have had a couple better but I really like the way I’m playing and anything can happen tomorrow. I feel like I’ve been playing great and good golf will follow”. “I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but it would mean”.
Nothing irritated him more than the fifth hole. So, as per tradition, the 53rd player, Jason Day, was first out on Saturday morning alongside a marker, a member of Augusta National who would play with him so as not to be completely out of rhythm.
Motivating Garcia is the fact Sunday would have been his great countryman and inspiration Seve Ballesteros’ 60th birthday.
“Yeah, it’s not easy, because it’s always – having a chance to win a tournament is always exciting”, said Garcia. Garcia has played in 71 straight majors and hopes to shed the title of the best-ever without a major win.
“He just said, ‘”I’m going to putt out to give you the glory, but you’ve got to make it, ‘” Couples said”.
The trade-off is the lack of a stunning, horticultural brilliance – the 13th hole here is named “Azalea”- that annually takes the breath away for many first-timers in the gallery. Good shots were rewarded, but if you got sloppy you could get on the wrong side.
“You’re thinking ‘I want to be in the afternoon tee times, ‘ but once again, it’s an opportunity”. It’s a long way back, but I’m going to try my hardest tomorrow.
