Federer beats Nadal to win Miami Open
There’s no denying that Federer has had an fantastic start to the 2017 season having already won the Australian Open. Incidentally, Federer has had to go through Nadal en route to all three title victories.
The number of consecutive victories Federer has recorded over Nadal, a career-first for the Swiss: Basel 2015, Australian Open 2017 and Indian Wells 2017.
Incredibly Federer last achieved the feat of winning the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami in 2006.
“For me, the dream continues”.
“Maybe if you didn’t see the match and just saw the score you might think it was some sort of straightforward match with a couple of breaks”. That’s not the full story. “He’s a big challenge for me, and I think for everybody”. I have no explanation. “I’m just excited to play against Roger always”.
“It’s disappointing that every time in my career I have stood here I get the smaller trophy”, he said. “I would expect him in the heat, in the wind, with this kind of a surface, to be very tough to beat”.
As for Nadal, he has been reaching the finals for four years straight but hasn’t been able to win a single Miami Open till date. In the fifth set of the match, Nadal had broken Federer’s serve and was on course of winning the title. Nadal was seeking his 29th Masters crown and 70th at the tour level.
So can Federer transfer his dominance on hard court to the European clay?
“I want to stay healthy and enjoy myself”. “I’m playing well enough to fight for everything, I think”.
The Spaniard felt the match “was closer than the results show” and Federer agreed.
The incident forced him to undergo an arthroscopic surgery. Few things decided the points and the match.
“All the grass is important to me”.
Miami Open champion Roger Federer does not expect to compete in any clay-court tournaments until the 2017 French Open. The Swiss may be 35 years old, but he certainly doesn’t look it on the court.
“When I am healthy and feeling good, I can produce tennis like this. My body needs healing – you’ll probably see me at the French again”.
Federer said he would sit out clay court tournaments including Masters series events in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.
“In 2005 when I beat you very lucky here in the final I told you you were going to win this tournament and I truly believe you are still going to win this tournament”.
‘Keep going and the clay courts are just round the corner so I’m sure you’ll tear it to pieces over there’.
